keg
I have to say that he has gone down in my estimation I have all ways thought that he is one of the best speakers that they have had in many years not frightened to tell the MPs to shut up but by saying what he did he is so wrong the speaker should always be neutral he can think whatever he chooses but never never say it out lowed I think that he should go. Betty Boothroyd was the best in my opinion. A proper Yorkshire lass!
Gordon R
Totally agree about Betty Boothroyd. btw, i know there some some more appeasing pics online, but, as per British media rules, i thought id choose a proper rubbish one........ This surely a bloke. :-)
Rewulf
Don't think that this is as straight as it might seem. It might give T May a bit of a back door to hold JDT back from coming over if it puts the queen in a difficult position. There is always lots of horse trading going on in the background. On the other hand he may have the balls to stand up for what he sees as correct procedure. After JDT has cosied up to Putin there is more unrest in the Ukraine. It seems after years of relative stability the main leaders are a load of dangerous lunatics. Don't forget that you can't please all of the people all of the time. Let's focus on this country being strong financially and well armed unlike the run up to WW2. By your own admission ,theres a lot going on in the background regarding Putin and Trump, but have a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8IUZ03Xqtc And tell me how better relations between the US and Russia are a bad thing. A Clinton presidency held far more danger and antagonism to world peace. FWIW both France and Britain had large ,well equipped armies that ,in the 'right ' hands should have been able to stop Germany, but somehow made a right pigs ear of it ! Only the Channel stopped history being written very differently.
chrisjpainter
I meant at the 'speakers' position. He was placed there as part of party pawn moving. That 'power' he's playing with today is not one he's been elected with. Actually, he is also elected, but by parliament and his nomination must be cross-party. The whole of the house of commons has to vote - in secret - on the candidate. In order to be a candidate he must secure 12 nominations and at least three of those need to be from another party to his own. He got the gig in a tight run off (under a labour government) and then stood unopposed second time around.
subsonicnat
He has just shown his true colours.. A 5' blob of mouth,,He thinks he is the ultimate power in the House of Commons. He should be inpartial in his job,,as said he has nailed his colours to the mast.. He should be gotten rid of,with a vote of no confidence now.. Bazooka Joe
Gifted with his own importance, he should be neutral... And before anybody feels it necessary to remind me that he was democratically elected, let me just caution them to consider that the democratic process is far from infallible. It's a process that has, in the past, opened up the path to power for some real turkeys. Never under-estimate the stupidity of large numbers of people! You've still haven'y got over Brexit have you...
krugerandsmith
he is supposed to blend in and just do his job, his ego gets the better of him. A very self-important individual. Agreed and delusional. ..... the pillock.
old man
Betty Bouthroyd was the BEST Speaker of the House of Commons in my lifetime. Truly evenhanded and fair! Absolutely!

NickS
I understand that an invitation to address Parliament is in the gift of the speaker and has nothing to do with being partisan or otherwise. I guess Trump on his Christmas list and I doubt, given Trumps propensity towards throwing tantrums, Berkow is on Trump's.
big bad lindz
I know that the speakers comments have and continue to raise some concerns for some but has buck palace actually given an invitation to DT yet or is it all just hersay on what TM said after she visited the states ?? panoma1
As I understand it, the queen doesn't run the country the government does! Likewise the queen doesn't give the invitation.......the government does........via the PM. I don't know quite how much say (if any?) the queen has in it! NickS
I see the Tories are now trying to get Bercow sacked as Speaker. It is a sad day when anyone who speaks up is bullied in this way and is exactly what we are seeing in the US.

It is a sad day when anyone who speaks up is bullied in this way and is exactly what we are seeing in the US.Sacked he should be, he is meant to be an impartial person that maintains order, not vent his personal views and singlehandedly block the president of our best allie without the backing from parliament or the people. He didn't mind the leader of China or others, talk about double standards

So rather than be disgusted that the "Tories" are baying for his blood, would it not be better to see the double standards displayed by the speaker? NickS
I guess it is to be expected when they attack the courts, the press and anyone else who does not blindly accept whatever they want to do. I am fed up with the dealings we have with some regimes but you may be OK with that, which is your right. I do agree though that Xi should not have been given that platform either. And I am fed up with the hypocrisy that pervades most sections of the media when it comes to reporting anything whatsoever to do with Trump or Brexit. Trump calls for a temporary restriction on certain countries citing security concerns, he immediately becomes hitler/devil incarnate with ridiculous comparisons to nazism in 30 s Germany! Yet two EU premiers can spout hatred towards muslims and call for a total ban on any immigrants it chooses, yet receive no press coverage whatsoever? How dare the people of the US and Britain, democratically elect to do something radical to dig us out of the socialist rut we are sinking into ? So yes ,lets debate about double standards ,where were all the leftie protesters when Xi visited,or any other despot rulers we have entertained in the past ? You know youre hitting the nerve when you get these type of reactions, keep it coming .

mick miller
To be honest I found the SNP's 'performance' in Parliament yesterday more reprehensible and childish. Maybe we can sack them off while we're about it. Mind you, should we be expecting any better from them as a party?
