Salop Matt
As above folks, can anyone recommend a place to stay as close to Windermere as possible ? Am taking the wife away for her birthday later in the year so am looking for personal recommendations. TIA Matt

Dave at kelton
Not that close to Windermere but on the banks of Ullswater. The Inn on the Lake. Took my wife for a surprise at Christmas when they had offers on. Superb rooms staff and food.
Fatcatsplat
Do you want to be close to Windermere town or in the general vicinity of the lake?
Salop Matt
Windermere as we are up in the morning to the 4x4 driving place on the edge of Windermere, not the in Bowness part if I have that right. ATB Matt
Ricko
I used to like the Queens Head at Troutbeck for a romantic weekend away, though I've not been since 2006!

ATB Matt I would make sure your digs are on the same side of the lake then, when are you going ? ,as it warms up it gets very busy.
ips
The sun inn between windermere village and ambleside, lake view and close to your 4x4 experience. Or loads of b&b in windermere village itself and the road down to bowness. To be honest your spoilt for choice mate.

I've stayed a couple of times at The Sun Inn, the room at the top of the tower is the one to have, windows on three walls looking out at the views. There's a Velux in the en suite so you can look at the hills whilst having a shower!

Scully
Gilpin Lodge between Kendal and Bowness in Windermere is extremely nice, but not cheap. It is however, quite remote, so a drive to anywhere from there.

Was about to mention this one earlier but got distracted. ? I did a lot of work in this hotel over about four weekends one Autumn in which they fed my OH and my kids for free while I worked there. The views were stunning and the food was great.

keg
They were great with some boat trailer tyres i needed inflating, normal pump wasn't fast enough to bang them onto the beads, they had a proper compressor. Very friendly and would not take anything.
