I'm 67 and started shouting 7 years ago

bought a 725 sporter

on a whim I bought a Vincenzo BERNADELLI straight stock 12gSxS, loved it. Then I got a Baikal 12g SxS IZH 54, then a Bayard 16g SxS, then an AYA 20g SxS ( the last 2 from Mr Wabbitbosher ) I shoot all the SxS regularly and better than the 725

Cheers chaps lots to take in but it makes me more interested in joining the SBS going to take a look at  Aya  4

I doubt these over and under things will ever really catch on 😁😁

just joined the site and have just found this so here goes,i have a thomas tuner 12g side by side.27" barrels with two triggers and a i can not get over how well this old antique shoots.hand made and just shoots like a modern gun.only downside is i have to shoot a lot lower to connect but with practice can hit 70-75% on the clays.

Thomas Turner were particularly noted for their very lightweight guns (and I mean very lightweight some being well under 6 lbs and some even nearer 5 lbs for 12 bores).

Hello. If anyone reading this has a valid SGC I would be happy to let you have for £45, a side by side 12 bore that I no longer have need for. It is an ejector, 70mm chambers with a long stock (extended in wood) so would suit someone over six feet tall and I am based in the East Midlands near J21 of the M1 Motorway. Or a non-ejector, 65mm chambers, with a length of stock to suit someone say 5' 10" tall or so for £25. What's the catch? None. I've too many guns and auction houses nowadays don't want SBS guns.

BOTH NOW TAKEN. BUT I HAVE TWO FURTHER LONG STOCK BOXLOCK EJECTOR GUNS NOW LISTED ON P/W CLASSIFIED UNDER GUNS FOR SALE (PRIVATE SALES).

Just got myself a new side by side for the coming season, Zabala sxs 410, 3" chambers, multichoke, sst, ejector.... Little beauty! I know it's only a baby one but can I join side by side club?

The splinter fore-end on a SxS is there to hold the barrels and action together, and is not long enough to hold and shoot effectively.  The left (for a R/H shooter) hand should be mostly holding the barrels. 
And, whatever you do, don’t do what I have seen some do and try and put two fingers at once on the double triggers! Use the index finger and slide the hand back slightly for the rear trigger, (hence the straight hand stock).

A hand guard can be useful, particular on a hot peg, or when the woodies are piling in, also when shooting clays.

I use one all the time.

Don't you find they encourage rust (presumably by condensation?)

I've taken to wearing shooting gloves (even decoying in the summer)

I also use a (actually one on left hand only) glove when it is likely to get hot (rare for me).  I have found the problem with hand guards is that they don't fit different guns and can either be too tight to fit correctly, or too loose and slide around.

Not if you take them off and the each of each day, no.

Then the answer is one per gun, as I have. In fact it feel odd for me now, not to have a hand guard on a gun (except 10b which a beaver tail forend).

Both fit well, don't move and are not loose. I hate wearing gloves if I don't have to, and only do so if cold is an issue and even they I have a nice pair of Dent's mitts that cover the backs of the hands with a thumb and middle finger loop to keep them in place.

Ah, strange - my guns always end up with slight bloom of rust regardless - even if I put oil on the hand guards first.

One per gun would be rather extravagant for me.  I have two in total, one a tight fit, one a looser fit.

I have similar 'open palm' gloves which I use in the winter, but I have a single left thin leather full glove for the hot barrels in summer.  In fact it is rarely a problem as my usual clays come in 'stands' of 10, and my live shooting is more like 25 shots per day.

I'm afraid I don't enjoy simulated shoots and flushes where you shoot a large number of shots in a short time.  It's just not enjoyable for me.  On the other hand, I have had some lovely days on the moor where I have walked all day for  a couple of cartridges fired ..........
