Jacko3275
At the weekend I was talking to a lass I knew as kids during which I mentioned I go clay shooting she then proceeded to ask if i also had an air rifle and could I get rid of some rabbits from her 10 acre paddock I know it’s not much but it’s a start

panoma1
Well done! But don’t be tempted to use the shotgun around horses.......it can spook them very badly!

Walker570
I have the Mossy 410 with moderated barrel and it will startle horses in a 10 acre paddock and in any stables alongside. Stick with the air rifle. Check out where the rabbits emerge and ask her if you can put up a small hide/blind to sit in. Obviously late evening after dark is the best time. I shoot rabbits on a similar area and I just sit in the Land Rover looking over where I know they emerge. I do use night vision. I'm fortunate there I can use the 22RF safely. Not that quiet then ..I will be able to park where I need to or can get with the l200 pick up and as the field slopes quite a lot there’s a good back stop Edited November 25, 2019 by Jacko3275
pigeon controller
I gained three rabbit shoots from girls at the wife's stable, my method was to have a seat and a small hide between to areas of rabbits on all three. I use to set up before dark and wait , I then purchase night vision which allowed me to walk all night if I wanted. As I use an air weapons it was silent. On the one paddock I fenced the holes off with electric fence tape to keep the horses away. When I walked round in the dark the horses left out would follow and the rabbits did not spook. Good luck. I tried a 20g hushpower at park lodge a couple of weekends ago it was very front end heavy that’s why I was thinking 410 much smaller

London Best
I too sit in my Land Rover waiting for rabbits to emerge on a 12 acre paddock. I use a silenced .22LR and it sends the horses barmy. It is the bullet impact that scares them, not the rifle report. Ultrastu
Problem with a silenced .410 is that its generally too loud around horses and your range will be about 25 yds which takes some stalking into range .. Swinging a shotty on bolting rabbits (which will be rare on a paddock )isnt a great idea when large beasts can be easily in range . Stick to a .177 pcp with good silencer if your sub 12 . Or any calibre if you go fac . I still like fac .177 for rabbits especially around horses etc .as the fallout risk is much reduced and it kills very well . motty
I have used rifles and shotguns many times amongst and near horses. Most of them don't bat an eyelid. Well done on your first piece of land to shoot. This could easily snowball into much more. I have also enjoyed chasing rabbits with shotgun and truck/quad. Very fun and challenging shooting. For the rabbits near the horses stick with the sub 12. I have few places to shoot blacks in farm yards where the 20g will not spook the cattle and the birds will keep coming. udderlyoffroad
Well done on your first perm. Yes, horses do vary, what spooks a flighty rescued ex-racehorse will make a riding school pony flick its main at you in contempt. A .410 doesn’t have a greater range than an air rifle, and it still produces a reasonable bang up close. Enough to lose you a permission if the horses spook. They only advantage is that you can shoot them on the run if they bolt (the rabbits that is, not the horses), whereas with an air rifle you have to stalk in. Maybe in the summer, if the owner takes the horses to the local show, you can co-ordinate with them and have a wonder round with your clay gun, whilst the nags aren’t there. Best see what the situation is with the neighbours before you do that however! Personally I’d stick with a sub-12ft airgun till you know the land, and your feet are well and truly under the table. As has been mentioned, horsey types talk to each other, so doing a good job here could pay dividends...

I am going to stick with the sub 12 as there are paddocks either side so like you say if word spreads it my go from 10 to 100 acre ... I was just curious about the 410 hush and how quiet they actually are

Dave-G
Take the time to arrange a first visit while the horse owner/rider is in front of it - making a fuss of it with feed etc. If the horse see's she is not concerned the chances are it won't be bothered after the first shot or two which would ideally be from a fair distance, then do a few more getting closer each time - still while the owner is fussing with it - and eventually just near the horse but paying no attention to it nor you.
