1990, Day 1 at Manchester, our course lecturer gives a speech which starts with ‘ah you’re all here, you’re all right on and ready to change the world eh; I bet you’ve all even signed up with the Socialist Worker lot?’ He then starts laughing to himself and says ‘ah the naivety of youth, give it 10 years and you start to pay tax and you’ll soon be voting Tory’.

That’s always stuck with me because it’s true. People will be groovy and woke for so long as it suits them and their personal identity at any particular time.

My Humanities studying housemate at the time (who long term wanted to be a stockbroker) joined the Student Socialist Worker Party only because he thought it would make him more appealing to the opposite sex 😝

Daft naive young people don’t tend to stay that way forever; they have to grow up, get employed / run a business, pay tax, become a parent and so on.

If labour are counting on retaining the young vote when it matures, well they really shouldn’t.

Apparently our Saudi corespondent thinks so!

Lisa Nandy on BBC2 with Andrew Neil coming across as a relatively sensible and reliable potential opposition leader.

No doubt that will stop her getting enough votes.

who ever comes to the forefront..........it will still result in a split party....maybe even 3 ways.....brexit....remain....momentum.........it is going to be utter unmanageble turmoil.....they will never be able to agree on anything.....vote as one....or even think straight....

The problem is, can you believe how politicians come across in the media, especially the visual media?.....is it the way they wish you to believe they are? Or is it the way they really are?.....most politicians have many faces, and show us the one that gives them advantage/popularity

She seems about the most likeable of the bunch. I didn't see the interview, I'll have to try and find it.

Probably yes, but that may help her in the long run.  The next leader is atm at least, unlikely to do well in the next election. If Boris takes us out of the EU and is seen to be ploughing money into the north then he is almost assured a second term.

She/ they all missed a trick though. If just one of them had ignored the whip and voted for Boris's deal, they would have scored at least a few northern points.

Yep, that's about the size of it. They will get a 'continuity-Corbyn' and be in the electoral weeds for most of this parliament. I very much doubt whether the leader they choose this year will end up fighting the next GE.

I hope Emily Thornbury wins then we'll never have a labour for the foreseeable future

Quite honestly you can safely say that for the other three also.

Out of the bunch my choice of the best of a bad lot would be Lisa from Wigan. However I think she has jumped too early,if she had kept her powder dry. She would have been in a far stronger position in 5 years when she gets a bit more experience and maturity.

I see Starmer on this morning giving it large about removing power from Westminster and redistributing wealth- anything to get power.

Perhaps he could make a start by redistributing his wealth and that of the other so called socialist elite

The old Labour con about redistribution of wealth has worked very well for them from after the 1st World War up to the present day. The mugs that vote for it believed that they would be on the receiving end. Somehow it never happened, no surprises there

The only redistribution of wealth and advantage I have seen via Labour whilst in government........is to themselves, as MP’s!

A proper reality check maybe need here?

All politicians of whatever flavour will always put them selves in the front of the queue, period? I

t's just what they do, spout lies and platitudes then keep on feasting? recent situations in the house have proved that none can be trusted with the keys to the door?
