Tradespeople such as the ones I saw in the lane this morning cannot possibly comply with safe distancing rules. They are taking the P and risking landing us all with a much tougher regime.

Let me as another question: If it's okay for the self employed to just carry on working, why do you think the government is willing to treat them similarly to employees who are unable to work.

When I was self employed I was based at home working with specialised printing equipment, but I still had to meet clients, deliver finished work, do the banking etc. It's nigh on impossible for the self employed to comply with the rules, particularly tradespeople working in people's homes.

All the self employed I've spoken to recently have accepted that they can't carry on fitting kitchens, decorating, plastering etc. for the forseeable future.

It's NOT 'nigh on impossible' to comply with the rules, if, like me, you do gardening work or just outside work AND not have to come into contact with anyone / customers.  If people are sensible (aye, there's the rub!) then it is perfectly safe.  What really annoys me is the fact that supermarkets are still open to the public.  Never mind letting a limited number of people in at a time....they could still contaminate any item that they happen to touch or even cough on (accidently, I hope).  As for us going out doing pest control...why not, if we are, once again, working alone and in the middle of the countryside!  I really do think that it is an incredibly valuable service that we do and we are protecting the future food supply in this country.

How are we to be fed?

Advice is to wash and sanitize everything!

My point was How can cross contamination be prevented in a supermarket?  If one person (who has the virus) touches an item but doesn't take it with them, then someone else comes along, touches the item, wham, they could potentially become infected.  I agree with you that we should wash and sanitize everything and that should mean that everyone in a shop sanitizes their hands BEFORE touching anything, the again when packing it at the checkout!  But does everyone do this?

Possibly not, but as long as you do and I do we should not catch it. People have to have access to food and cleaning materials. There are not enough troops to distribute it around!

So that brings the payments in to play doesn't it?

Yup. I'm not 100% upset about it. Paid as normal this month then the 2.5k a month after that.

It's a 40% pay cut for me, so not entirely a bed of roses, but considerably better than a lot of people.

No point crying about it. Last recession I took a 20% cut and still had to work!

And my CV went out to a few places Monday.... Always play the options.

Risk is subjective and are any building sites hiring at the moment?

If you are looking for work there are less risky alternatives such as horticulture or agriculture where a person can be on their own for hours at a time.

Supermarkets are hiring! My lad just got himself a well paid job in our local fruit and veg shop, and our local Sainsbury’s is hiring; loads of jobs going apparently.

Im actually quite glad that these posts appear on PW, it makes me feel far better knowing that its not just my place of work that has a number of people that find it hard to understand the Government guide lines regarding essential work, and whether or not you should go to work.

Is that you apologising for getting your facts wrong then? No didn’t think so.

It’s just you opinion that people shouldn’t be working not that of government.

The government is trying to flatten the curve, not make it turn a right angle.

hello, to be honest do any of the big supermarkets realy care about their employees?   Asda TV latest advert , quote we care about our workers, !!!!!!, they should all have protective masks and proper gloves, Tesco yesterday all the good workers rushing around doing their best with any old gloves, till workers with no masks,  i never see one Manager, the shelves were reasonable stocked but they must have had a night shift to adjust the prices,
