@Newbie to thisI know, and I am sorry. I was being facetious and thought it would be a clear lampoon. Clearly I would not be so reductive or prejudiced in my views. Two of my sons have godfathers who are Londoners born and bread. My best friends.

Your opening comment made me laugh, i knew exactly what it was about.

I do fear that it will have flown clear above the head of the original protagonist however.

What beliefs is he intolerant of? Surely you're the bigot if you don't tolerate his belief that Southern Fairies are thick? I do dislike the incorrect, popular, over-usage of of the word

Yes, you are correct, you'll have to fogive my thicko southern use of words, I should of used 'prejudiced' in place of 'bigoted'.

I hadn't bothered reading the other thread until walkedup posted it on this one, otherwise it may have clicked.

No need to be sorry, like I said above I hadn't seen the other thread so took this out of context :good:

I'd never noticed before it became prevalent on Facebook, but some people I work with actually say "should of". I made it into my 30's before this became a thing!

Well I made the original comment and I'm not the least offended at having it deflected back at me. I took it for what it was, a lampoon. Thick is thick where ever you find it.

But my comment was based on a much longer held belief, People in the South do believe Northerners are thick, I can't change it I was brought up with it, my mum's family came from Gateshead.

A northern accent can still be a disadvantage to say getting certain jobs. The TV presenter Steph McGovern went public on Northernism in the BBC.

Now this is not thick, this is deliberate and criminal, and its in West London

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-54564448

and I am given to believe its been happening regularly. Southall is a "complex" area, I will leave it at that.

Agree. Especially about accents. It’s jot just “northern”, there is a perception that any regional accent “sounds” bumpkinish. To a degree there is a scientific basis in this, the higher educated and more specialised you become the less likely those that you are exposed to daily will have grown up very locally to yourself. Your accent melds into those others and becomes less regional. The architects I employ think I am “posh” because I “don’t have an accent”, which makes me laugh. I do have an accent but it may be less regional than theirs as I’ve lived in many cities and worked with a multinational workforce. Then when I go out of the north west my accent is considered “strong”. I am all in favour of regional accents when the pronunciation is not ~affected~ or legibility ~effected~. Sadly many scouse accents are ridiculously pantomime, a modern affliction and incomprehensible even to fellow scousers. As for “stupidity” there is a certain level of linguistic laziness in the  oral structuring to make certain sounds clearly and a reduction in the range of sounds produced. It is interesting how when a toddler learns to talk they “sound” like regional accents as they improperly form certain harder sounds...

‘Three’ becomes ‘free’ and in scouse becomes ‘tree’.

‘Feather’ becomes ‘feafver’ and in scouse becomes ‘fedder’.

I can say it. I’m from Liverpool and work in Liverpool still. My grandad lived in the tenements on Scotland Road (very central Liverpool) he was orphaned aged 4, started smoking aged 11 and was in the army fighting in north Africa aged 18, after the war he was a docker until he died. He was a huge man and very tough, both as an MP and then union enforcer. His deep booming voice would be instantly recognisable to us all as scouse but a world away from this high pitched squeaking scousers have become in a completion to sound more childlike and uneducated.

But it works the other way too, a lot of people are put off what people like Boris, Matt Hancock, Michael Gove etc are saying because they have posh public school accents.

I think the majority are put off because they are imbeciles rather than their accents. I have nothing against JRM - the most conservative Tory and the sharpest accent. Most people respect his honesty even if he often has a different view and motivation to me he is at least intelligent and consistent.

My Father in law is from Scotty Road. His parents ran a few of the pubs over the years there. He worked on the docks and then went on to serve in the Merchant Navy for a few years

Not all people in/from the south think northerners are thick.

some are intelligent enough to look at people on a case by case basis. (Except maybe in the case of America 😂)

A very disrespectful post. You should apologise to Saltings for your insensitivity.

He has a bloody good reason for writing as he does. I would rather have his worthwhile input than yours!
