So we either import more, and pay more for it that way. Or support our local farmers, which I’m told brexit is all about, and pay them more to cover the costs that were previously covered by EU grants. What I’m trying to say is that farmers don’t always have a choice; outside influences beyond their control govern what they will be paid for a product. Due to the farce that was ‘mad cow disease’ my BIL was once paid 50p each for four heifers. Farming isn’t regarded anymore as an ‘essential service’ according to some farmers I know, and a mate of mine says he doesn’t mind the single payment being scrapped as long as they are paid what the product is worth, but as everything has risen significantly in cost to the producer ( farmers ) as you point out, that would shove up costs to the end consumer, and ultimately that is where your buyers ( supermarkets etc ) play their part by stipulating what they will pay. Among other things , it shows how badly we suffered in the 2008/9 recession , and also how strong and resilient we are for a nation of our size. Just pause it if its going too fast for you. Good find - really shows how Nazi Germany prospered by reneging on WW1 war reparations to prepare for WW2, and I'm not sure if they did the same for that too. Generally having a crack about the price of food and stuff, they’ve now lost their single farm payment or something? So he was saying food is about to get a whole lot more expensive. This was in the interview wit Jeremy Clarkson that was up on this thread last week or so - loosing 20% a year over 5 years it is telling that Government is cutting this but still wanting more off the electorate in taxes
armsid
I often wonder how we lived before the Common Market came into force was the cost of living food essentials taxation etc. lower or higher as i can remember goods going out of Coventry factories and jobs aplenty until the vote and the decline started. We paid into Europe and farmers were paid to overproduce or leave land fallow to keep prices stable across the board due to innefficient farmers in the Market. We can now grow what we need (if there is any farms land that has not been built on) interesting times ahead

Rewulf
Another example of the EUs inability to understand national sovereignty. EU law apparently takes primacy over a nations Constitution, hopefully Poland stands strong on this, and if necessary, leaves. https://notesfrompoland.com/2023/02/15/brussels-launches-legal-action-against-poland-for-challenging-primacy-of-eu-law/
udderlyoffroad
Thing is, these cases will get more and more common as the people in EU member states realise what their politicians have signed them up to as part of the Lisbon treaty (and to a lesser extent, Maastricht). There is no stopping ‘ever closer Europe’, they’ve made that quite clear. It is not a trading bloc and hasn’t been for some time. None of this will change the minds of the people running the country in London, Edinburgh and Cardiff, we are heading back in, one way or another. And on incredibly poor terms (punishment membership). Fun times.

No, same direction, only 4,000 or miles eastwards. Doors are wide open there.
Cosmicblue
Despite the provocative headline, Michael Heseltine makes a very valid point (worth 7 minutes of your time to listen to) in that Boris and Rees-Mogg did a terrible job of negotiating us out of the EU leaving a dreadful mess that is effecting all of us now. TIGHTCHOKE
Yes that may well be the case but Hesseltine the dinosaur would have had us stay in and do what the EU told us to.

I think you miss the point, which is sovereignty , they are nibbling away at a countries right to run itself. Read the report again , and see if they 'deserved it' How does the EU have a right to tell a country how to combat child abuse ? Does the EU have a right to tell a country its not allowed to hunt an animal it has hunted for centuries , and isnt endangered ? It doesnt 'like' Maltas rules on legal service advertising? Its marine ecology reports are late ? This micro management aspect of the EU is intrusive, and is a forerunner of the totalitarianism to come. It’s weird that our very close ancestors fought against this sort of totalitarianism regime not too long ago, and yet here we are all happy clappy, sleepwalking into an ever increasing encroachment of sovereignty. I hope Malta and Poland tell the EU to do one. Edited February 16, 2023 by Scully

The hilarious thing is , its exactly the same country driving it, look at their behaviour when we pulled out, theyve tried all kinds of tricks , short of blockading out ports to cause as much economic woe as possible. Yet you get some on here sagely blaming the process of (pseudo) Brexit , rather than the EU causing the problems out of spite , hurting their own as well as ours. Im not saying this ends in war (though nothing can be ruled out) but we appear to be in an economic conflict , with a bunch of unelected fascists..again . Exploitation of children for pornography? The beauty of the EU is the common standard. No point protecting birds in one part of they are wiped out elsewhere, same for fish. Makes sense to me part of the package of modernisation.

Youre obviously reading something different to what Im reading . You make it sound like the EU is the only thing stopping nonces doing as they will in Malta, and since when were turtle doves vulnerable ? Whats that thing they do in France with nets , are they going to stop them from doing that, or stop boar shooting, or grouse ?

Its about introducing the child protection measures that they had agreed. Turtle doves no idea about their vulnerability but some scientific group somewhere thinks they are endangered.
