The mutterings on the football forums suggest that Lineker "doesn't make friends easily" so maybe people at the BBC are more than happy to watch him dig himself into a hole.

I suspect that as one of the (if not THE) highest paid people in the BBC, despite having a relatively short 'on air time', there may be some resentment.  I have also heard views on how 'good' he is; most here don't think he is very good, but some others in the press seem to think he's the best football 'pundit' around .... ever.   Not being a follower of football, I can't comment.

The key issue here is that he is paid a lot of money to present a programme for the BBC - and the BBC contract will have clauses which it is said he has broken.  In particular impartiality.  When you have a contract, you have to follow the rules.  In return for that you are paid.  If tghe contract clauses are restrictive/onerous/difficult to meet - that is reflected in the amount paid.  He gets a lot, so expecting some restrictions might not come as a surprise.

The real issue is that the BBC has a charter with which it has to comply.  The contracts to contractors and employees are (or should be written) to reflect what the BBC needs to do to comply with the charter.  The BBC management led by the Director General has to ensure compliance - and that involves staff (employees and contractors) doing what they are told.  It's what happens in any organisation.

It comes down to who runs the business - the management or the contract presenters?

500,000 extra viewers tuned in because he wasn't on Saturday?

Doesn't say a lot for his contributions.

Hope this shuts down much of the over paid waffle shows being presented across all the MSM to fill in time that could otherwise show more meaningful content. It seems just lately there are way too many chat/opinion/drivel shows about headlines and inner newspaper content going on.

Everything to do with a regime keen to deflect its failings to everyone and anyone else. Those supporting him? Or those calling out heavy handed tactics of the regime forcing the national broadcaster to act in its favour.

Just the same old same old Tory hating, anything to have a go at the government but with no policies or solutions of their own….Campbell, Cumberbatch, Blair and a host of wealthy celebrities who wouldn’t let any immigrants anywhere near their house.
Clarkson, although supportive of an open door policy ( whilst keeping his firmly closed ) is more supportive of Lineker stance against BBC policy, which he hates with a passion.

Hmm! Government ministers have successfully had a prominent entertainment personality removed from his job for expressing views criticising government policy also calling out his opinions as "unpatriotic". Just like their earlier foreign counterparts did to publicly visible critics of government actions in the same 1930s Germany than these current government ministers now object to being compared with.

Lineker's apparent refusal to back down came after revelations the presenter, 62, admitted his tweet may have been a 'step too far.'

Ex-tennis pro Andrew Castle said he was working with the Match Of The Day host on Thursday when Lineker made the confession.

Castle said Lineker agreed his tweet comparing the government's asylum plan to 1930s Germany rhetoric was a 'step too far'.

On his LBC show on Friday, Castle said: 'I was with Gary Lineker for half a day, plus, on Thursday, I was working with him. His phone was going absolutely mad.

'I said to him, that I thought to draw the parallels between, you know, the rise of Nazism in the 30s and early 30s government and the immigration policy of a serving Conservative Party was a step too far and he agreed. And he said so. He's alluded to that. "

 Andrew Castle - I'll try and apologise for him, as he's too arrogant to do so himself.

Are you saying he would be lying, leaving himself open to a civil law suit?
He may be arrogant, but that doesn't deter from him repeating a conversation he had with lineker

Just because you may not like a peson he wouldn't leave himself open to a massive law suit by lying.

How would that law suit work, with no proof to back either side up?

It's a lot more likely they've got their heads together to try and get Lineker out of the mess he's created for himself.

Admit wrong doing in private, while saving face in public, then get someone to 'leak' he 'might have gone too far' it's rather weak though.

He regrets nothing! Except...  The fact he's inadvertently created the perfect excuse for the BBC to get out of paying his contract.

I agree with you on the possibility that he has got a third party to "leak" that he thinks he might have gone to far, what exacly that would achive now is beyond me.It has spiralled out of linekers control.

This is a silly comparison, I’m afraid.

it’s a shame we don’t teach proper history in schools. Watching “Fury” and U571 do not a historian, nor a current affairs commentator for that matter.

Lineker realises that leaving the BBC will affect his visibility and therefore future earnings.

All those ex BBC employees, like Matlis and Soper, have disappeared since they stormed off in a huff. Radio and podcasts cannot compare to being on the national broadcaster.

MOTD without the studio guff sounds ideal to me. If the BBC said they’ll save £10m per year just from the football budget, the vast majority of punters will support them.

Hello, maybe the BBC will look at that and think we could save £1 million a year 🤔

And maybe not, his 'contrition'  worked and he's back on TV for the beeb next weekend.

So much for the tory controlled BBC eh?
