Houseplant
I read a lot of doom and gloom on Pigeon Watch about the UK, but it can't be all bad. A colleague just visited for several months. She is NZ-born to parents from Belfast and has lived in NZ all her life. She went to Northern Ireland, Scotland, Yorkshire, Lake District, London and Sussex. She loved it and is considering moving over! Predictably, she liked the pub culture, rolling countryside and history. The oldest building in NZ is only about 200 years old! She didn't like the rain, cold and cost of eating out, although she thought supermarket prices were a bit cheaper. She also thought that people are more friendly in NZ. Interesting comparison. oldypigeonpopper
Hello, Even having a long holiday in UK i would suggest she think very careful to live in UK permanently , Rents are very high unless she has friends or family to stay with maybe in NI , What is her type of work ? Retired ?
Houseplant
She's coming up to early retirement at 60. I don't think money is too much of a concern for her.

Yeah but a lot of posters on here are a load of miserable fellows who will moan about the moon or sun being up in the sky. Take no notice. Both the sun and the moon will rise again tomorrow. Good shot?
But what about Wednesday? 😏
Minky
Well what about Wednesday..?? oh yes.. I'm on the slab to have both my eyes worked on for cataracts. Hopefully my eyesight will be so good that I might be able to score 100/100 with my target rifle again.

Possibly a good job you flew away when you did? Tell her to stay where she is for the sake of her sanity. We are trapped in an endless, mindless loop here? 7 hours ago, Minky said: I read a lot of doom and gloom on Pigeon Watch about the UK, but it can't be all bad. Possibly, but common sense says that with the continuing dawn and dusk the country is withering away just benefitting a few?
yates
Sorry but the UK, all four countries is rapidly detiorating. Increasing cost of living, crime, excess population, pollution, loss of countryside and the staggering rise of young Muslim extremists in many of our towns to name but a few reasons not to live here. oowee
It's a stunning place with wonderful history, beautiful scenery and friendly people. Unfortunately your colleague missed the best part of the country which is the south west. It's breath taking. My wife says the best part about Britain is the detail. Minky
You see what I mean..... moan moan moan. You only have to look at news from around the world to see how great GREAT BRITAIN is. Most of the countries in the world are either under dictatorships or suffer from wars famine or religious fear and control. Generally life is good here. Oķ things might not be to everyones personal liking but I'm sure that even in heaven some of the angels moan about how some angels get issued whiter robes than what other get issueď. And it's starting to get light here so another day is dawning. Donald and Kamela are fighting it out on the deck today and probably tomorrow and into the future. The doom and gloom merchants would really have something to moan about if they lived in 90% of the rest of the world.

BobbyH
I think it’s area driven for people to slate the UK, for example only, London can be brilliant; but most thinks it’s not. I like London, but wouldn’t want to live there. Norfolk - in my opinion, the UK’s hidden gem - you can’t find a more beautiful place. It’s like people who want to live to America because it’s ’better’. But they have no healthcare really for example.

I believe we do, the NHS is under staffed and under funded yes, waiting times to get major operations is months and months yes, but would you rather wait 6 months for an operation for free, or pay in excess of 10,000 USD for one? I have traveled about a fair bit when I was in the R N and seen some nice places in the UK but I love my county of Norfolk and live life within my means , human nature say we always want more but just enjoy what you have got instead of constantly moaning about what you haven't got , time is slipping away as time never stay still . No, Europe's largest single employer (think about that) is mismanaged, not under stafffed or funded.

Did Coltishall for 5 years and stayed on for another 4 when I came out until the call to go home could not be ignored. Shame you'll never do St Mawgan or Chivenor. Still, Lossiemouth is worth a go. I was down Devon and Cornwall for a time in my mid 20s and I must admit it was a lovely area and I could easily have got used to it , I was in a naval rowing team at the time and used to train on the River Tamar , Plymouth was a nice place which looked as if it had been rebuilt after suffering a lot of damage in the war years , I also remember getting badly sun burnt after swimming in there outdoor swimming pool , that didn't cause my sunburn , it was drying out in the hot sun after laying on the rocks , at the time you could had been put on a charge for self inflicted injuries if you were out of commission for your duties , now that is going back a bit . Scully
The UK is a wonderful place to live. We have our problems like any other country, mostly caused by minorities like idiots, feral street scum and politicians, but on the whole it’s a great place. We could do with the right for law abiding people to defend themselves on a practical and effective basis, the reinstatement of capital punishment in relevant cases, for ‘life’ sentences to actually mean life, and for those who choose to end their own lives the ability to do so without the threat of punishment towards those who aid that choice, but apart from those minuscule niggles, its a grand place to live. 😉
