TIGHTCHOKE
How can the Department for Work and Pensions live with themselves when they treat genuine cases like this? https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/nov/09/blind-woman-denied-benefits-because-she-attended-dwp-interview-with-help-of-mother "I said I couldn’t keep going through things like that. Much as life might be easier with the money, my life would be easier without the stress of trying to battle for it.”

Gordon R
I attended a PIP assessment with a relative. We were left in the waiting room for a fairly lengthy period whilst an assessor kept walking through to observe us. He objected when I said I would be noting down every word he said. I had to speak to his manager to correct this. He asked the same questions three or four times on several occasions. I advised him of this which he denied. I read the notes back over to him. In short, he was a disgrace. At one point he asked my relative to squeeze his hand I asked why. he said it was to check grip strength. I asked if his hand was calibrated to check pressure. Obviously it wasn't so I asked him to check my grip. He objected to having his hand squeezed rather firmly. I advised him that his scientific test wasn't very scientific, but very subjective. The whole interview was designed to trip someone up. Nothing to do with an honest assessment. The companies that do the assessments have targets for failures. No-one would pay them if they passed everyone. Stories like the OP don't make pleasant reading, but are sadly all too familiar.
12gauge82
Both common sense and humanity is being lost from our society. No one is an individual anymore. The above case is utterly shocking.
oldypigeonpopper
Hello, This was many many years ago but due to a Work Accident I had to go through the DWP Assessment , It was an experience you would likely get PTSD today and i do not say that lightly from what i read online, I got turned down 3 times but won on appeal, Why ? Because I was helped by a Lady with immense Knowledge of the DWP System at the tribunal , That is the key to most Claims, But it did not stop my Employer TWA from giving me the, Oh sorry to hear that !!!! Oh by the way you Fired !!!!!!, Trouble is today it is finding someone like this Lady !!!! Edited November 10 by oldypigeonpopper

Or are you claiming they don't exist? Because they do, and sadly it has gotten far worse since covid.

The sad thing is that the honest citizen suffers just for being honest whilst those prepared to lie and exaggerate get rewarded for their dishonesty. The old saying "Honesty Always Pays" is far from the truth when dealing with DWP. Our local paper does report some (few) cases that are investigated and found out - very much the tip of the iceberg one suspects, but the common factors are (a) lying about incapacity and (b) failing to inform when recovered (obviously applies to temporary injuries, not long term disability). There doesn't seem to be an operational scheme for classing permanently incapacitated (e.g someone who has lost a limb or eyesight type disability) differently from those who have disabilities from which they will make a full or near full recovery (such as broken limbs etc.). Scully
My sister has learning difficulties, and was deemed to be, as was the term back in the 60’s and 70’s, ‘backward’. She was a very premature baby when born in 1956, and her hips were displaced, which while noticeable when she walked, wasn’t really an issue until she reached her 60’s when age related degeneration has made it increasingly difficuilt to get about. She applied for a blue badge parking permit some years ago and was turned down after assessment. She applied again and was refused again. It took her four attempts over numerous years before finally being granted one. If you saw her getting in and out of a vehicle, or negotiating stairs, it is plain to see she has problems, but for some reason neither of these exercises were deemed relevant. Anyhow, neither her nor her husband are IT literate, and any new function or communication via this means has to be gone through piece by piece, and sometimes written down for them. Both were invited to apply for their pensions, which wasn’t a ‘thing’ I knew existed; ( rather naively as it turns out ) I simply thought your pension was automatically issued at the relevant time. I was dumbfounded to discover that as a result my BIL, who whilst not having any disablement was poorly educated as the only male offspring in his family, seldom attended school but instead worked with his Father on the family farm, had received no pension for over two years and my sister one! I asked them for the relevant paperwork, followed the links therein, and had them both sorted in less than half an hour. Both their pensions were backdated. I’m staggered to discover that there is no part of any department making further inquiries of those who haven’t applied for their pensions, but there again if they’re being made via the internet, it won’t help those like my sister and her husband. Unfortunately, the professional scroungers are often much better at navigating ( blagging)the system , than those that genuinely need help , and so those in genuine need get pushed aside. Because they do, and sadly it has gotten far worse since covid. child used to run a benefits team in dwp she now deals with them daily for the vulnerable so I know how benefit system works it’s geared to avoid paying out rather than assist or those in genuine need would automatically be told which benefit they qualify for rather than being forced to find out their self we will always have fraud where billions are involved typical of gov it costs the dwp more money to detect fraud than they recover
Gordon R
Quote it costs the dwp more money to detect fraud than they recover That might indeed be true. You can't recover money from people who never existed or dwell in another country.

To chase scroungers requires effort and intelligence, it's far easier to sit there and deny genuine claimants maybe? 10 hours ago, Gordon R said: That might indeed be true.
