  1. 1. Are semi-auto's accepted at your shoot?

Just to add another spanner into the works, for those that say it is unfair having 3 shots instead of 2. Do you also disagree with people double gunning on driven days. Because a good loader/gun team will be able to shoot alot faster than one person with an auto.

I personally dont agree with using a semi auto on a formal driven day, although i have shot game with mine (my o/u was in the gunshop). My reason being that they arnt traditional, nowt to do with being unfair or dangerous.

A O/U wasn't traditional until a few decades ago so you can't use that theory against the use of Semi-Autos.

i sent twoexpirienced guns home on the first day of the season last year due to them having autos on a driven day its just not cricket theres tradition and safety

its striking the loss of etiqute there is in some shoots in some areas

if theres no standard theres chaos

we had one gun turn up it tracksuit so i asked him to sling his hook to

Personally if I'm shooting with anyone I don't know I'm wary regardless of what they are shooting with be it o/u sbs or semi.

If theres no semi's allowed on your shoot go find one where they are allowed simple as that. I don't really get the issue here at all

what happens if a man who is a fervent sbs shooter has an injury(god forbid) and he is told to give up shooting unless he uses something which soaks up recoil like an auto, are you telling me he should n`t be allowed to shoot??? <_< in my opinion a gun is a gun so long as safety is adhered to. as far as i can make out it is total gun snobbery. i shoot an auto and proud to do so.

maybe we're missing something with traditional pheasant shooting in the UK, after all this looks sporting :hmm:

Obviously your shoot has a name for not being too fussy then, and someone just pushed it a little too far with the tracksuit?

The whole shooting world never ceases to amaze me......

What a bunch of old women...........

If a privately owned syndicate, who pay a lot of money for their pastime, have an agreement where no-one shoots with a semi-auto and they wear traditional shooting clothing, then you play by their rules - its their game and you are a mere guest.

If you turn up looking like a walking tree, a can of lager poking out of your pocket and with a semi that looks like it been stored in the bottom of a lake then dont be suprised if you are asked to go forth and multiply.

When you run your own syndicate then its your game and your choice of what to wear and how its run - but there will be people whining because they want to shoot with an air rifle or a crossbow. So you let them in and the knife throwers will whine .....

You have to draw a line somewhere - and its been drawn where the syndicate members want it to be.

I voted NO. I am afraid it is not just enough to be safe, you have to be seen to be safe on a game shoot. Flags do not cut the mustard.

It is a shame as I would quite like to use one, especially as i get older!

and me I never knew it was the keepers place to send people home,

unless by keeper you mean shoot owner / shoot captain

The shoot I beat on the headkeepers word is final if it is a safety issue, not sure about the wrong gun or trackie bottoms though :hmm:

Whoever mentioned about a can of lager poking out of the pocket? in fact on the snobbery shoots you have your sloe gin or whatever so in essence you are under the influence, so why try and run down the people who shoot with semi-auto's. Yes I do run my own syndicate with my family and friends; I can assure you on my syndicate that we are as safe as any O/U or S/S shooter and we treat our game with as much respect aswell.

They are not snobbery shoots, just shoots where if you are lucky to be invited, you play by their rules or you dont get allowed to play.

If I went to a wedding and the invite said "Formal Dress" and I turned up wearing a gillie suit do you think the ushers would let me in??

As you have your own shoot, then you have set your own rules as to dress, guns, safety and behaviour, exactly as I said in my post.

  • 3 years later...

I would bet that I could fire 6 accurate shots with an over and under quicker than anyone could fire the same from a standard semi auto.

I remember seeing a guy with a 9 shot auto shooting a flurry and after the initial 9 shots he missed so many clays while trying to reload.

Ill take that bet ! :)
