What .22 LR?

Dear All,

The time has nearly come to go shopping for a .22 LR, waiting for the postman. I will be using it for targets, 25 to 100 yards and in the future for bunnies etc.

I first was looking at a Ruger 10/22 but really want a bolt action.

Have been looking at a CZ with 16" heavy barrel and laminated thumbhole stock. Scope wise, considering a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 or Bushnell Banner equivalent. A Deben bipod of some sort. Moderator.

Like the Anschutz 1417, Ruger 77/22 and Browning T-Bolt (especially this one, but none near me either :() also but all a bit pricy.

I would prefer to buy new as im a bit funny like that.

Any thoughts or personal experiences would be appreciated.

Happy Wedding

P

Welcome to the forum mate, plenty of posts on just this subject on here if you want to do a bit of digging, but to give you a quick summary on what will be a very personal choice for you, the Anschutz and Browning will no doubt have a beautiful build quality, all of the rifles you mention will probably be more accurate than you can be. If you want a totally reliable, very accurate rifle without spending a big extra chunk of cash, you'll probably end up with a CZ, especially if you're going to take it in the field and possibly give it a bash or two! There is no substitute for going to your local RFD and handling a few different rifles, you'll soon figure out which one feels 'right'.

My personal choice was the CZ, but as I said before, it is a VERY personal choice. Hope this helps :good:

Ian750 has hit the nail on the head, go to a few dealers and handle a few, there aren't any bad rifles out there if you stick to the more well known makers, what feels "right" is very subjective and personal. If you have the luxury of friends with different rifles - ask them for a go to see what you think.

The problem with asking for recommendations is that by default, people will simply suggest the guns they purchased themselves, out of brand loyalty or to subconsciously justify their own purchasing decision, so you won't necessarily get an objective view.

IMHO :D

Buy a Weihrauch HW60J by the way

I use a CZ 452 style 16" barrel with sirocco moderator and a 3-12 x 50 endurance 30 scope. Have to be honest Ive not used a different brand of rifle but I'm really pleased with it and haven't been tempted to better it, and as said the rifle is likely to be far more accurate than I am.

I'm sure you will be happy with whatever you choice you make.

Id suggest a CZ but siloette/synthetic stock, got mine from eastern sporting £525 all in, rifle/mod/scope

a friend has the thumb hole stock type, all I can say is "heavy" wouldent want to be carrying it around

also not the type of stock you'd want to get wet/blooded/mudded, mine simply wipes down with a cloth.

I had a CZ Varmint 20" in .17HMR, in no way could I fault the accuracy and it shot brilliantly. It was bloody heavy though and I always thought I was missing on something a little more desirable/better made. In the end I swapped it in and after some umming and ahhing I'm going for a Browning T-bolt (wood stocked) looks beautifully made, fantastic reviews etc. most importantly it's light.

CZ have however got some serious customer loyality, of which they're probably very glad. Not only are their customers loyal but also (in some cases) desparate to recruit others to the cause.

One balance though, if you go for CZ you'll no doubt have a brilliant rifle that will shoot as well as anything short of an Anschutz (which I think are bloody ugly lumps anyway), it'll no doubt need some fiddling with when it's out of the box though.

Ian70 has got it spot on, don't go for the CZ because they get good reviews. Make sure you like the look and the feel of the thing, far more subjective than people seem to think. I got one totally on recommendation (had never shot one) and was never fully happy with it.

Unless you are into serious target, which doesn't really seem to be the case, there is no advantage of a heavy barrel accuracy wise, some just like them. :hmm::hmm:

Any CZ will be as accurate for general work as any Sako, Anschutz etc, so just get what fits and what you like.

For my sins I have been able to use a few over the years, but my requirement now is Pest Control, I have no need for anything more than CZ!

To my mind there are three choices Second hand Sako finfire (magazines are quite rare now i believe) Annie good but like all limited only by the ammo, you just aint buying more accuraccy OR CZ like most i have gone this route they are not so cheap as they were but i never ever doubt the gun only me or the ammo miss :good: I love them so much i have two varmints, like most suggest you need to handle a few but remember to factor in a good scope, moderator and a few spare mags from the off.

Well that covers it!

Just an opinion, get a cz, 16 inch,(I have one in 20!) and in American, silhouette or style.

Sak mod if it hadn't been mentioned.

As said above - 452... but I will provide a slightly different reason behind it. I doubt you'll get spare 10 shot mags for about £15 for the others.

And as for scope - Pro Staff all the way, Bushnell make some great scopes but the Banner isn't one of them... I'm not saying it's a bad scope but it's not in the same league as the Nikon.
