  1. 1. Why do you shoot foxes

    • Because they are foxes
    • To protect game birds
    • To protect farm stock (lambs / piglets)
    • To protect poultry
    • To protect other wildlife

To narrow down the answers to the poll the question applies to the main reason on your main piece of ground.

I've voted for the protection of gamebirds as most of mine are shot at the request of the 'keeper on lowland game shoots, but I also shoot them on my stalking ground as that is upland sheep ground and they suffer from foxes predating lambs. There are also plenty of places where I do not bother them, no game shoot or vulnerable stock to protect.

i shoot them to protect all of the above. different farms have different stock i think the fox makes a rod for his own back stunning animal and smart but needs to be mannaged so there for i went with because they are foxes. for the reason of the damage they cause across the board they dont just target one object they target them all

I voted for the protection of lambs . I had on farmer last year who claimed to have lost 26 lambs . Now we have permission there that number is 2 . All his lambs are born in sheds in early Jan then he puts them all out so he knows exactly how many there are . We have also seen remains left out near sets . Now he's a happy farmer

I've put "To protect farm stock" but this is not the only reason! It is also to protect poultry or occasionally game birds - It very much depends on the individual circumstances and of course when the farmers request me to "Thin them down a bit"!

i dont shoot them , all arable land and they clean up the guts and wounded bunnies for me .

they do but they also clear up the grey partridges and leverets so there is more to shooting foxes than is immediately apparent. I shoot arable land that has a game shoot but the benefits are far more widespread than just helping the released game birds

no game birds near us unfortunatly , only a huge lake and a turkey shed complex . neither neibourghs get on with land owner , so i leave the foxs alone . never have shoot one , but dare say i will in the end . only ever seen 2 on 600 acres , never any young even at all hours . never seen any near lake that is a nice spot for pinks and ducks in season .

i know fox is classed as vermin , but in my eyes they dont harm us so get that 2nd chance .

You have not put a "For Enjoyment" option, because that's why I shoot them.

My sport of shooting foxes may indirectly benefit others, such as the local shoots, sheep farmers and wildlife in general but the sole reason I shoot them is because I enjoy it. Same reason I shoot pheasants, deer or any other quarry.

This is the right answer. Don't need to justify it.

It's funny how many people shoot to protect the crops/livestock to justify their actions.

Truth is you all do it because you enjoy it.

The ONLY 'enjoyment' I get when shooting foxes (if you can call it that) is that I know that I have quickly and humanely dispatched the animal, causing it the least amount of suffering possible!

The same goes for all the other quarry I shoot. There is an amount of pleasure I get though, and this is due to other creatures having more of a chance to survive because of my actions.

Well Sir, you are a real hero. I'm blowed if I would invest large sums of money in boom sticks and spend my spare time trudging round the countryside for daft altruistic reasons.

Here's me thinking people shoot because they enjoy it.

i enjoy it though the killing only gives me the satisfaction of knowing that i am doing a good job for so many other creatures wild or domesticated. It mainly the thril of the chase that is totally part of some of us. left uncontroled they will continue to multiply until the point they spead out then later run out of food (this is already happening, look at the urban fox). in a natural balanced state the dencity of foxes is very low, unfortunatly we will never have that balance in the UK regardless of what some would have us believe. i cant vote as on most land its a multitude of reasons, the one reason i wont use is because they are foxes and i don't think its justifiable to kill on some land were the harm they can do is offset by the good and these places do exist

In reply to your reply, I am certainly not a 'hero'!

I merely pointed out that the word 'enjoyment' does not apply when I shoot a fox, and see a large hole in it, with it's entrails hanging out. Some 'shooters'however, like to see blood and guts. As mentioned, I do get pleasure out of it,knowing that the farmer's livestock are going to be that little bit safer. The same applies when I shoot 100's of crows a year.

And there's nothing wrong with trudging around the countryside.

As for 'investing large sums of money in boom sticks', well, I don't drink or smoke, and I earn more than enough, so I can spend my money on whatever I fancy.,

Finally, let's not forget that this 'poll' is/was about, 'why do you shoot foxes'!

thats the point though Charlie is right we all enjoy doing it very few have to do it to protect their livelihood. its pitting your wits against them and the thrill when the shot strikes home. The poll is really the way people justify doing it

I used to shoot the pigeon shooting club land all 2500 acres of it and we were expressly told not to shoot the foxes because they are the friend of the arable farmer, not my words but those of the young lady administering the shoot.

On one of my other permissions all fox's are to be shot on sight regardless of age or sex or time of year, for the protection of both live stock and game birds.

Do i enjoy it? you bet i do, i enjoy shooting and killing all quarry i aim at and shoot. :)

I have a syndicate along with a few friends and family so I shoot foxes here to protect our gamebirds. However, the other places I shoot foxes is to protect livestock, when it comes to Woodcock season all these farmers let me onto their land to shoot so I return the favour by keeping the vermin down. Also I do it as I enjoy it, I wouldn't spend money on fuel and guns etc if I didn't enjoy the shooting aspect.
