POST OPP BLUES

I have just returned home after yet another operation at the local hospital, up until 2 years ago I was the picture of good health, never missed a days work or shooting, then following a prostate cancer diagnosis I made a serious mistake, on advice from doctors I had something called 'brachy therapy' a treatment where they implant radio active pellets around the prostate and hit them with high levels of radiation, the pellets then continue to burn out the cancer for up to one year, problem is the radiation burnt everything else as well, bladder lining, urethra, rest of the prostate and the bowl lining, over the last 14 months I've had 9 procedures to try to correct the damage, the last one Thursday, the future looks pretty dire, the specialist has explained there is very little left they can try and the next step is to remove the prostate and damaged section of the urethra along with the urethra sphincter muscle, make a repair to the urethra and fit a rubber sphincter muscle with a pump, so when I need to pee I have to pump the muscle to release , then wait for it to close again,

I am just 66 and feel I have a long life left, which I intend to live to the full, that means as much shooting, fishing and boating as possible, its just so frustrating when I have to sit at home for weeks waiting for the bits to mend as I cant walk any distance let alone drag all my gear up the field ,

So to any of you out there who are looking at forms of treatment for prostate cancer, whatever you do, don't have 'brachy therapy' .

Its far too aggressive , there are several other options which should be less harmful long term.:no:

I see this quite a lot in my line of work, where overly eager doctors offer procedures that aren't always best for the patient but for their own ego. This is incredibly brave of you to put this on a forum and i really do feel for you. If ever you are up in lincolnshire, i am sure there would be many people along with myself who could help you out for a days shooting.

Good luck with your recovery, make sure you stay positive.

Regards,
Tom

I used to have a lot to do with brachytherapy and without fail it can be the difference between cure and not for many cancers ,but as you say it can have such miserable consequences, all of which you seem to have got caught up with.

It shows great strength to come here and open up to all.

I truly wish you get some peace and relief from these procedures and hope that anyone reading your post who ends up having the same choices you had will be able to go armed with the knowledge you've given them and at least be able to make the decision openly.

John.

the more you hanker to get out ..the quicker you will be up for it.....at least you can get a bit of rest have a bitch and moan and look forward to the harvest and the stubbles...on the stubbles all you will have to do is drive right up to where you want to set up and take the motor back and wander empty handed back to the hide

let us know how you get on please

I lost one leg in 2007 bounced back shooting and fishing but not able to do as much as before ,then in 2010 lost the other leg, 6 months later walking with no sticks shooting and fishing again now struggling to carry the gear and slopes are a no no.

Boxing Day last Dec my right stump broke down and split .i have just had 3 months in the wheel chair now got new legs but it's like day one only able to walk about 6-8 yards .I will go on it's very hard but we must adapt our style and be positive ,please carry on as you have fight all the way you will be let down now and again but get up and carry on .

Don't ever think you have to give up because there is always some one worse of than your self
