activeviii
I think England did very well undead, they won a game. Its all about taking part, nothing to do with winning. Isn't that the way its taught in schools now.

krugerandsmith
Whats Jerusalem got to do with England is that city not in the middle east. I am proud to be British and proud to be Scots. Being proud of your nation is what this thread is about not about what sport you follow. You must be the only one up there .... after the Highland clearances ... I'm surprised that statue is still standing on the hill behind you.

Thunderbird
As any student of English literature could tell you, the song Jerusalem was derived from a poem by William Blake. Rather than being a rousing British (or even English…) anthem, it's actually a pondering study on the rightness of the industrial revolution and stating that perhaps had Jesus in fact visited England in his 'wilderness years' (more specifically Glastonbury) then perhaps there was a brief flowering of heaven within the British Isles at that time. So if you think it should be a national anthem what you're saying is that you want Jesus's second coming to be based here. It's not dissimilar to the appropriation of the Bruce Springsteen song Born in the USA by rednecks and some Republican morons in the USA as some kind of sabre rattling anthem in the middle-east. Muddy Funker
Clearly you know his name so why try to distance yourself? Ah yes, to demonstrate your superior disinterest. It's not exactly hard to know a few top players names is it? Not with the amount of time they spend in the media. I have a total disinterest in football but hey check this out, Steven Gerard and Wayne Rooney. I could probably name dozens more, it means nothing. malkiserow
Why does anyone care? It's only chuffing football. What does football mean anyway? to lots of "fans" it seems more of a religion than a game backed up with huge emotional investment. Perhaps the players put too much effort into their own futures around clothing and perfume ranges and not enough into being world class footballers as individuals and as a national team. Scully
I'm a fan of football but not of those who currently play it. Saying that, I wanted us to do well, and as much as I dislike the man I was pleased for Rooney when he scored. I think we have the emergence of what could become a good side, it's just a shame we will now have to wait another 4 years (and possibly another manager) to find out. With a Brazilian granny no doubt. Remember the old joke about Rooney approaching his manager? "Boss, I've done that jigsaw and it only took 3 weeks!"
