Davyo
Was thinking of packing in shooting, and getting rid of the shooting bus as getting on a bit and I am no longer getting the buzz.Often fancied the idea of a little soft top as I am now partly retired and want something to tinker on with.I like the look of the little MG TF 135, I am aware of the head issue but would get one with the head done. Anybody got one or had one,any advise would be great. Edited July 13, 2014 by Davyo
Mungler
Dreadful car. Dead cheap second hand because no one wants them.

Paul T
Personally, I'd be looking for much more of a classic as a new hobby. They are much easier to work on and can be real head turners. I had two mgb gts (one after the other) when I was young and I loved them. I moved on to a Triumph Stag and loved that too. I might get another MG B but a roadster, though I've always had a hankering for the MG TC though - beautiful cars
Davyo
Strange i thought it was only the head that was an issue other than that the owner review i have read seem quite possative.Anybody got any ideas on a little soft top, only want to spend £5000 max.Dont want the likes of old exotic' as mate paid £6000 for his boxter and its already cost him £4000 in 2 yrs. Was thinking of MG TF TOYOTA MR2 HONDA S 2000 MAZDA MX 5 BMW Z4 (the 1.9 )

oscarsdad
The S2000 will not go wrong...I am seriously considering getting one myself. Not very relaxing to drive though as they rev to 10,000rpm.

Anybody got one or had one,any advise would be great. Get yourself a Panther Kallista or Lima. Absolutely beautiful classics. Easy to work on, the Kallista is almost all Alluminium with ford engine and running gear. Proper head turners and when driving feels like a true classic sports car. And a very good investment. HDAV
Lotus Elise? Most of the newer stuff you can't tinker with, Over budget but MG RV8 £8-10k sound like they are your ideal motor. Jag XK8 also but possible big bills, a guy on piston heads got an mgf for £69 I think now that's cheap motoring!

TbirdX
Fiat Barchetta, MR2 Roadster might find a 350Z for a bit more than 5K, westfield, robin hood, boxster, s2000, alfa gtv spider, audi tt, Z3 or Z4 perhaps, lotus Elan, MX-5 (good as they are everyone and his dog has one), Smart Roadster. There are others of course. S2000 is the sensible choice, won't break down and don't cost a fortune but try to get the facelift model with traction control, or else be careful in the wet ;-)

ayano3
They also have gearbox mechanism problems too. Son in law had one and had this problem and the repair was going to cost more than the car was worth.

Simon Robinson? http://www.simonjrobinson.co.uk/ is the only one that comes to mind. There are lots of specialist websites - don't discount ebay as I've seen some belting cars on there

Loads of stuff for and about MG from the MGB series back to earliest models. A very active Owners Club and loads of spares available including new bodyshells for the B series. defender
MX5, dude at work swears by his but only with decent tyres, cheep tyres make the back end go for no apparent reason Edited July 13, 2014 by defender
Cambsman
Lots of good ideas here. My tuppence worth would include a Mazda RX8. Don't be put off by the rotary engine. Remember that you get to use the word Wankel when talking about your car. Can't put a price on that. Just pop lots of oil in it and drive it like you stole it. Huge fun. If you want something a bit more grown up then by a second hand Jag XKR (the original shape). Big supercharged V8 engine with acceleration you will never tire of. Awesome. You can pick them up cheap but be careful as the bills can be a tad on the large side. Don't bother with the standard XK8. Not fast enough. Other than that, well just buy a Jag. An XKR. Did I already mention that?

Cambsman
RX8 arn't the engines worn out by 60 to 70k and fuel consumption not good Like most engines you need to check history etc. yeah they are a bit thirsty but as the saying goes "if you can't afford the petrol then you can't afford the car". But in terms of smile per mile factor it is a great car. Tho I would always go for a Jag. Hugely biased I know but I have had a fair few an never had any problems. Best way to get close to supercar performance for fish n chips money!

theshootist
How about a TVR chimaera 400. At 5k the car maybe a bit of a project but the sound is worth it. If you just want to drive it then an mx5. It's the car that mg/rover should have produced. The MGF is not good and the engines are awful. I am hoping to pick up a 2003 mx5 that my friend decided to just leave in the garage after she was offered £800 part ex. It's done 135k but I would rebuild and eventually fit a turbo conversion. RWD, limited slip diff, well balanced... I like them.
thepasty
How about a TVR chimaera 400. I was at a SIlverstone track day a few years back and a TVR Chimera owners club rocks up, around 12 cars started the morning session when the track opened at 9 and by 12 every car was broken to a greater or lesser extent (Worst being one caught on fire and one shredded itself on a concrete barrier). I always wanted one until that day... I'm an MR2 MK2 man but out of the cars mentioned I'd go S2000 then MX5, great cars if a little girly
