The Lawn Ranger
Had one years ago, think it was a 51 plate, it was a 2.0 petrol and very greedy on the fuel. The thing I hated most was that you couldn't select the 4 wheel drive, the car had to loose traction before it automatically kicked in which in my opinion defeated the purpose, was glad to see the back of it TBH. colin lad
mine is a 03 and is 2.0l lovely car drives superb but as above a tad thirsty getting 33 mpg on a full tank with both urban and urban extra colin edit to say again as above it selects 4x4 when it needs it so i don't use it off road wife drives it and i got myself something for off road Edited January 29, 2015 by colin lad

safc1973
Used to have an 03 plate 2 litre vtec- i am fairly sure it had a chain rather than a belt. was thirsty but the cost of buying a newer diesel version wasnt worth it unless doing over 20,000 miles a year. Only got rid of it part-ex for a van, would buy another if I wanted a car in the future.
Fuji Shooter
We had a 54 Plate 2.0 on lease for my wife. Drive OK but it was the most depressing car I have ever sat in. Just a sea of dark grey and black plastic. Also glad the day it went back. Only saving grace was it had a large boot. Keep looking there are much better options. onefulham
As said we found our CRV thirsty and what's the point of non selective 4x4 if you want to go off road ? We brought it to tow a caravan which was a mistake due to the thirsty drive. The plus point is the Honda Legendry build quality, had it five years towed all over the UK and France and nothing ever went wrong or dropped off. chrispti
They are not a 4x4, they have a poor "all wheel drive" system.

Moblies
Had loads of them, reliability is a given. The mk1 was a bit van like, mk2 much improved felt like a car, mk3 worlds apart and the latest mk4 is all singing all dancing and decent economy. The 2.0 mk3 petrol don't expect much more than 33mpg the diesel is not a great deal better. They do hold their money so there are probably better and cheaper choices for regular off road. More of a Chelsea tractor than an off roader. As been said boot space for a family car is hard to beat. RAMMER BURT
i had a mk1 auto crv, on road just about got 30mpg driven with care, off road it was down to more like 15mpg nice to drive but to thirsty
Davie_M
What about the 2.2 diesel about the 05 era any good
colin lad
i picked mine up may 2014 with 14k on the clock and its a 2003 model so a bargin for me, though i had my xl7 vitara for 9 years before that and loved it much better off road than the honda colin
Sprucey
I have a 1997 auto cr-v only done 64,000. Was my late grandads, and although it is thirsty on fuel and the 4x4 system is auto I have never got stuck, even on road tyres. It handles Mud and boggy ground no trouble. I took it up Longmynd the other week, got up carradock no problem. This is the track you see the big 3ft lift discos with all bells and whistles making somewhat of a meal out of it. another big plus is space! no centre console. plus a picnic table in the boot! I am looking to make a change to an X-trail though, but I can't bare the thought of parting with it. Ohhh flipping sentimental value. matone
Had a Mk 1 and thought it was great, did everything you could sensibly ask of it off road, was very reliable ,but thirsty, especially in cold weather.
dougall
had the 2.2diesel for 100,000 miles brilliant on runs/lugging loads etc....not good off road.....never missed a beat...sadly did'nt miss a transit doing 75mph either...... BrowningDJC
May not be the best on fuel but those engines are mega reliable.
spanj
apparently the 99 plates are better in the snow than a porsche 911................
Westley
On road better than the Suzuki or the X Trail, off road, well I have never been stuck and that is with road tyres. I did have to wait whist they towed a Rangey out a couple of weeks ago, I sailed through but I suspect driver error by Rangey. Mine is 2.0ltr. petrol, auto. 28mpg around town 36mpg on motorway at around 60mph. Do 80mph and it drops rapidly to below 30mpg. From the front seats backwards, the X Trail was the better vehicle. From the front seats forward the CRV every time. Very reliable motor. Sorry, forgot to add mine is an 08 with 63,000 miles. mudpatten
Mine is an 02 plate 2 litre automatic. I must say that I`v never felt it to be especially thirsty. It`s an excellent and comfortable drive which handles well on the road, will cruise comfortably at 100 mph (Abroad.) and, although it is`nt a real 4x4 I`ve never got it stuck even though it has road tyres. Qualify that by saying that I`ve never taken it into any really extreme conditions `cos I know it`s limitations, although it does have an exceptionally generous wading depth. At approaching 13 years of age it has sailed through every MOT with no preparatory work and still drives like a new car. The engine just goes on and on and on and on....... retromlc
my 1999 is thirsty, but very capable in the snow etc, better than I thought,I run O/E tyres as the cheap ones were awful.car slid all over the place, bridgestones I think.with grippy tyres I recon they'd be alright off road,I use mine for decoying and it's been fair, not tried anything too muddy tbh. apparently the 99 plates are better in the snow than a porsche 911................ that's true, where'd you hear that LOL
oowee
I have an 11 plate 2.2 diesel which was my shooting truck. Its got great electronic stuff that keeps it going but not realy an off roader. Now my wife uses it and i have a 90. When i get out of mine into the honda it feels like a limo :-)
