Shooting Rape in August

Following my drive back from Greece I received a phone call from a farmer informing me that he had birds on his rape , now this was a strange call as this farm has not grown rape for many years. So I agreed to go on Friday but got rained off and went on Saturday on my own as DB was away. I arrived at the field at 10.30 with no birds down, the field is an old barley stubble which has been planted with fodder rape which is just showing with two leaves. I watched it for thirty minutes and the only birds about were flighting high across the field to a rape stubble field , three fields over on another farm who will not allow pigeon shooting because of his game.

At this point the farmer turned up and said he was sorry to call me out as there were birds down on Thursday. I agreed to set up and give it an hour to see if I could decoy the passing birds, which I did with twelve thawed birds ten on spikes and two on the magnet. In the first hour I had 25 , the second hour 15 and the third 3 . The best part of the first hour was I would have five birds pass wide infront a few moments later they would come in from the back wrong way to wind and turn infront to the decoys so I knew that the pattern was ok . I now had approx fifty birds out as decoys thirty yards both sides of the hide. this is the point that the reverse flightline started from the rape stubble field , the birds I shot were rammed with seed but they still wanted to look at the decoys and paid the price. I stopped shooting at 18.00 and left the field at approx 19.15 with birds still comming across the field. I picked up one hundred and twenty eight birds and the farmer was well pleased . The problem now is with three months away Ive forgotten how to post etc and my computor is saying youve been away for a long time do you want me to update the system? ?????

:good:

Light weight summer hat!!

We really have missed the tales of your sporting exploits. No mention of wrestling with octopus or swordfish over the last three months, or even Syrian immigrants to your private island.

Thanks JDog the Syrian inflatables were great fun with the speargun!!!!!!!!!

Seriously impressive that when you set up, birds were flying high over the field but you then managed to decoy 25 down in the first hour!

Your magnet really is a magnet isn't it?

Looking forward to a regular Sunday night read of your Friday/ Saturday exploits

If my memory can recall I had at leased eight pairs in the first hour, some I had to wait for the second bird to be in range. I also shot the first hour wearing my new prescription sun glasses .
