Back down in Gloucestershire to work for a few days. An early start on Friday and half a days work that day. In the evening I met Lloydi from pw along with two friends to have dinner and keep one eye out on the rugby.

One of my trusted former shooting buddies called me earlier in the week to say that there was a line going into a bean stubble and it looked good for today so that is where we found ourselves at midday. The line was already strong when we arrived.

The bright sunshine made our decision as to where to set up easy and we were in action quickly. This was the sort of line that I have yet to see in Lincolnshire and see rarely elsewhere as something over 1,000 pigeons came over the field during our three hour session.

Not all decoyed by any means and it was obvious after a while that many wanted to be in the barley field behind us and some wanted to go even further. We took too many shots at extreme range and missed too many birds as a result. Oh for full choke whatever that is and 36 gram cartridges (only kidding).

We picked 176 pigeons which most people would be absolutely chuffed to do. We were also pleased but it would have been better if our shooting had been of a higher standard.

Excellent bag for three hours shooting Mr JDog , we are not short of pigeons , but how our fields are spread out at the moment it would be rare to see 1000 pigeons come to , or over the same field .

With the amount of food about round our way , there is no need for them to travel further than there door step to have something to eat .

Never seen 1000 pigeons in the last 10 years!!!

Re reading my post I realise that I failed to mention one of the possible reasons for my poor shooting. As others have mentioned Hull superfasts are out of production and I have run out. Yesterday I bought some Eley pigeon in 30 gms and I consider them to be greatly inferior to the Hull ones. Birds I would normally have shot dead I hit but did not kill.

That's my excuse anyway.

Jdog, what a fantastic 3 hours that must have been, one to remember....very envious indeed!! I'm sure you hit more than your fair share of high birds too despite your constant self put downs, even sans Hull.

My favourite pigeon cartridge is the Eley 32g pigeon in plastic wad, not used the new 30g but I'll not bother after your review.

I had a good afternoon shooting 69 today which by this summer's standards here was very good, but still over 100 down on your short session......you'll be back on your old stomping grounds more than you think (I think)

Any thoughts on why we do not get those sort of numbers up here JD? Maybe we are such good shots that there arnt many left in Lincolnshire

I just don't know. The cropping is very similar and there are plenty of woods. Yet 100 miles away in Norfolk the place is covered with them.

The only good numbers I have seen in Lincolnshire have been coming out of S****horpe.

I wouldn't say the county is covered in pigeons , but we have got our share , so why are we any different from other counties ? these are my reasons , you might have your own .

Compared to other places , very little shooting disturbance .

Unlimited food supply

This time of the year very little shooting due to game shoots

Around the Brecks in Norfolk ( Swaffham and Thetford ) , Very large holding woods.

None of the above might not make any difference what so ever , and there are times when we wonder where they are or where they go .

I do trespass into Suffolk now and again and push a few over the border , just to boast our numbers up

Managed to download a picture of most of the bag and Jasper.

For those interested in how I am managing a young dog with so many birds to retrieve this is how it went. Jasper sat in the hide all afternoon. As soon as I took off the safety catch he peered under the hide netting. We had to leave the hide every so often to tidy up the pattern and I sat him outside the hide so that he could see me picking birds up. He was only called upon to retrieve six dead birds all afternoon which he did well.

At the end of the session when all the kit was back in the car we went hunting the hedgerows. He had my full attention and between him and the other young spaniel out with us we picked another ten birds. I believe that he is now a very steady dog. He watched the other dog pick birds close to him and he never moved. This sort of training removes the jealousy which some dogs develop.

I am no expert in these matters but this sort of gentle introduction appears to be working well.
