dob
I recently bought an old Charles Boswell ,Damascus barrel that's got 2 and half inch chambers and has been reproofed for nitro. I have had it dated back to 1869 and am looking for shells that are 2and half inch but are high velocity as I am used to shooting high v but don't want to damage the gun. Can u lot suggest any perticular shells that would suit an older gun.
Tim Kelly
RC professional are nice shells that seem to hit hard and not bite your shoulder. No idea whether they're high velocity or not and pretty sure I couldn't tell the difference if they were or weren't.
JJsDad
Eley Impax and stop worrying about velocity; it wont add extra birds in your bag !
aga man
I quite like Gamebore super game through my 100 year old midland sxs, but the eley impax mentioned might be kinder on the shoulder on busy drives.

browning123
RC Professional Game are a great cartridge - I've seen them successfully used on high pheasants.

Underdog
Forget high velocity mumbo jumbo and be prepared for a reality check :-)
kennett
As said don't worry about, most of the advertised velocities are make believe any way. I use hull high pheasant which are just a bog standard game cartridge and they have killed pigeons and game probably as high as you would get anywhere
JohnfromUK
Hull Imperial Game are excellent and available in both 26 and 28 grammes (12 bore). Both are good, but the 26 gramme version suits lighter and older guns exceptionally well
timd999
Lyvale Express Supreme Game come in 28g loads with a 65mm case length. They're an excellent cartridge. They also do Special Light Game in 26g loads which have low recoil.
Guest cookoff013
Forget high velocity mumbo jumbo and be prepared for a reality check :-)Sadly Mr dog, I totally agree 100%.Did you know that the speed printed on box is a guess, and derived from a test barrel, not a sported. +1 Speed is operated. Just shoot big shot
MAB1954
Just use 1 oz lead loads and it will be a joy to use, what the gun was designed for.
bruno22rf
There are hundreds of cheap guns out there if you want performance-your Boswell should be fed Eley Grand Prix paper cased cartridges and enjoyed like a fine wine-using her should evoke a sense of occasion
Paul T
Hull Imperial Game - used them for several seasons now through my damascus barrelled E. Harrison. Forget about the 34g high velocity stuff - why loosen your filings when high birds will still come down with 28g? Maybe go up to a #5 shot though? matone
Surprises me the heavy loads people use to shoot game nowadays ! Extreme birds may need them but most people don`t shoot extreme stuff do they?
JohnfromUK
Surprises me the heavy loads people use to shoot game nowadays ! Extreme birds may need them but most people don`t shoot extreme stuff do they? My thoughts exactly. There are a few shoots (such as the Devon valleys) where there are genuinely mostly 40 yard plus birds. These need a very good shot to bring down cleanly - and most probably a heavy load in a tight choke . There is no doubt that there are some exceptional shots who can do this cleanly and consistently but they are not 'your average shot'. For the vast majority of us for who 'high' birds are 30 - 35 yards, a few 40 yards, and many shots probably less than 30 yards, 1 ounce in a modest choke is just fine. It's putting the pattern in the right place that is needed - and too often cartridges, loads, chokes, forcing cones and goodness knows what else gets blamed for poor shooting. One of the best shots I have ever watched used a 1 ounce load in 28" light s/s guns from the 1920s. He could consistently and cleanly kill all birds on any 'normal' shoot day with few misses. Very occasionally, he'd take a very long shot - perhaps at a pricked bird behind a neighbour - and that was often killed as well. There is a skill in these long shots that is in the man, not the cartridge. If you have that skill, you are extremely fortunate - and you may also benefit from the cartridge. Most of us will only get a sore shoulder!
clumber
Eley Impax 1oz 6s. These with the old Tolley, throws a great pattern and a joy to shoot.
