evo
need some advice from you gundog experts, my shooting buddy has a welsh springer that is 17 months old , its a bitch and of late he is repeatedly taking the dog to the vets to have its anal glands squeezed , the dog is fine of a day but when she is in the house of an evening she is constantly licking her backside and rubbing it on the floor, the first thing I thought of was worms but it was not that, anyway he took her to the vet and the vet told him it was her rear glands and squeezed them to clear them, this cost him £12, he is now taking the dog to the vets constantly and is at the end of his tether with it because £12 a pop is not cheap, the vet has advised him the dog can have an operation to sort this but he has asked me if there is anything else he can do,, he mentioned it to his dog trainer and he said change its diet which he did but it still did it, he has also added bran to its feed which was advised again but its still doing it, the dog is being fed on DR Johns gold,, and eats fine and is also pooing fine and is a very active dog, health and weight wise the vet said the dog is sound,, any ideas what he can do or is it an operation to sort this out,, any help is appreciated cheers Evo

Ollieollie
you only need to smell it once! you'll know when you do and you wont forget it! i've never noticed it from my vizsla but my springer is quite regular, have done it myself before but he tends to sort himself out
bigbird
Dr John's? Are poos fairly solid and hard? No offence to your mate but mine crapped through the eye of a needle when I had the foolhardy idea of trying to save money on feed.... evo
Dr John's? Are poos fairly solid and hard? No offence to your mate but mine crapped through the eye of a needle when I had the foolhardy idea of trying to save money on feed.... no his poos are fine , the dog is fine in itself ,, its just he has tried doing it himself but nearly threw up all over the place,,said he wont do it again, I did laugh though,, I feed my springer on the dr johns and he is in great nick also no problems with his anal glands,, must say though, I think I,d get shut if I had to do that all the time, so feeding the dog bones seems to be the only answer so far

Paladin
We were going down that road, constant visits to the Vet's and looking like an opp. Until the Vet went on holiday and we visited the stand in Vet. No problem with him she said, just his diet. Put him on 'dry' food with a little hot water in the mix. Job done.
FalconFN
Very occasionally our cocker will get a fishy/metallic smell (but I've not yet reached for the marigolds ), it seems to go by itself but I've noticed it more often if we've not given her a range of food and she's only had dry. I would try raw bones to bulk up the faeces but maybe a different dry food could help long term.
malmick
I get a couple of scrag ends of lamb a week and bone them out for my 17 month old springer, he gets the two sets of neck bones a week plus the offcuts added to his wetted down dry food. He's come on really well in the couple of months I've had him and he makes short work of the bones. The best meat goes into a meal for the family 3/4kg into a madras curry today, nothing wasted
WGD
he has done it himself but said its not for him, he throws up at the sight of blood never mind puss coming from an anal gland,, any other ideas other than do it himself, If it's pus they're infected and probably need packed and a course of antibiotics. Adding bran to the diet can help, but if it's that regular an occurrence then a more permanent solution should really be sought for the dog's comfort. Twistedsanity
My mum has her spaniels done whenever they are groomed and it is a constant problem now, my GSD is ten and I have never had them done and as a result she doesn't appear to suffer with them at all, I guess the glands are there for a reason and in nature a dog would not be able to squeeze them on their own so they don't need squeezing? If it ain't broke I'm not the one to try and fix it

Stonepark
It is a diet thing, change the diet......until you find one that works, it may take a raw diet but try a lamb shoulder blade or pig knuckle for a couple of weeks I use CSJ CP21 Salmon and have never had a problem with any of my dogs. Dr Johns, largest ingredient is cereals (i.s. not a specified ingredient, just what ever is cheapest at the time)...............
loriusgarrulus
I have found our larger dogs rarely if ever need them doing. I used to have to do our old papillon at least once a month as he got older and less active. Not a difficult job. All you need is a pair of gloves a bit of kitchen towel and a doggy bag for the kitchen towel. Never found it that particularly smelly. Paul223
I don't particularly think much of wagg as a feed but... it doesn't half give my dogs nice solid dumps...
SimpleSimon
Natures Menu do a pack of 7 duck necks for £2.50. I give my pair one each per week and they have a good firm poo the following day. Less scary than feeding a great big bone.
