figgy
Have a look in the supermarkets as they have money off some good malts. I like the peaty Islay malts like Laphroaig and Ardberg. Glenlivet, Balvenie,Highland Park are all nice. Recommendations are easier if we know what you like. The Singleton is a good value whiskey that suits most palates. Edited December 7, 2015 by figgy
robbiep
Whisky : scotch WhiskEy : Irish or American. For Scotch, you also get into the single malt / blend area, but the range of flavours of Scotch is immense. Personally, I prefer a soft, caramelly type of Scotch, usually meaning from Speyside (McCallan, Balevenie, etc) or an Orkney (Highland Park). However, if you like your peaty whisky with a bit of bite, then you'll be looking for a Bruichladdich, or Islay type of drink.

Doc Holliday
Personal favourite of mine when I used to drink it a lot was Bowmore. Not too heavy and you get that nice slightly salty sea air tang to it. Laphroaig is a bit of an acquired taste. Very smokey and peaty, some even say antiseptic. Isle of Jura has a toffee finish I find, which I don't mind but have to be in the mood for. It's as broad as it is long and there are many a debate over which is best but it all boils down to personal taste so it will never be decided. Try and find out sneakily if your intended recipient has a leaning to one brand or another, so long as they don't say Gordon & Mcphiall 50 year old or something daft like that. bruno22rf
Laphroaig for me at the economy end-really distinctive taste

bruno22rf
Strewth, Flynny-have you got asbestos guts? I bought a bottle of Ardmore a couple of months back and it tastes foul-soon as it hits your tongue it tastes like Teacher's-bottle minus one small glass going free to anyone who wants it. MrM
My favourites - Monkey Shoulder (mix of 3 malts currently £22 in Tesco), Balvenie (£37). or Penderyn (from Wales). Personally not a fan of the peaty smoky ones. Edited December 8, 2015 by MrM
