Feltwad
The s/b gun of the flintlock and percussion period were know has fowling pieces and came in bore sizes up to 10 bore this changed to them been known has game guns in the breech loading period Those with a bore size larger than 10 bore were better known has long fowlers ,these guns had a barrel that started at 42inches long and went up to 6ft and more .The length of these barrels was because of the poor grade of black powder that was used in those days, today black powder is more advanced and a more faster on ignition . Black powder burns the full length of the barrel not like nitro so with a poorer grade of powder it took a long barrel to burn. the powder in those days was a powder known has punt gun powder for punt guns, for the 4,and 6 bore it was the coarse powder, for 8 and 10 bore it was Fg grade of powder for the smaller bores it was the FFg grade powder. Enclosed are 3 images of Long Fowlers Feltwad A Stand of long fowlers notice the lenght of the barrels Breech area showing different types of ignition Long Fowlers better known has Bank guns or wall guns Edited January 14, 2016 by Feltwad

Feltwad
Notice the stocks are very short! Yes you will find that guns of that period had shorter pull to the stocks than those of today , the main reason was that the average built man was smaller than today Feltwad
