CharlieT
.243 not enough gun for reds... Having shot them with everything from a .22 hornet up, I have never had a problem with a .243 dropping them. It's where you put the bullet tha counts. It's where you put the bullet tha counts. While I don't really like 243 I too shot loads of reds with it. Well not loads, three or four. And it was fine.Still would prefer a 45/70 :-)
mick miller
The last Ghillies I shot with used 243 exclusively for culling hill reds and they shoot hundreds a year between them, no complaints at all.

kent
.243 not enough gun for reds... Common misconception nz deer cullers were issued with 222 for the biggest forest reds on the planet Bigger bullets don't kill any degree better than one from a 243 unless misplaced then it's very marginal a difference You must use the right bullet for the job though not all 100 grains are equal They will all kill it's just some get more messy on the opposite flank
MAB1954
.22 Spring air sub 12ft/lbs 22lr .222 .270 .300 Mag. .303 .410 shotgun 16 gauge 12 gauge. CharlieT
While I don't really like 243 I too shot loads of reds with it. Well not loads, three or four. And it was fine. Still would prefer a 45/70 :-) I must agree with you. I don't shoot many deer now , just a few hinds when they are being a pest on my mowing grass and have no complaints when I use the .243. If I was to slim down, it's getting rid of my beloved 6.5 that would hurt.
JDog
My Red deer activities ceased many years ago and I am sure that bullets and rifles have come on a lot since I finished stalking. However I found that the .243 was suitable for most outings except on some ground for the heavier stags when a .270 was used.
bjlfishing
Easy one this rifles 22 lr 6.5/47 lapua Shotguns 12 bore over under 12 bore semi auto only other consideration would be if I'm travelling overseas then I'll probably buy a 300 win mag in the near future
Dekers
"What is the perfect rifle line up to cover most eventualities in the UK" If only! There is of course no such thing, as virtually nobody has most eventualities to deal with in the UK, so can't make a fully informed comment. I have 9 different rifles (2 x .22LR but all the others are different) and several shotguns, and that does me pretty well, I have considered the likes of a Hornet between my WMR and .223 as there seems quite a large gap, but to date I have not found the need. Its my business and I need to be able to deal with anything when the phone rings. For many people a spread of 2 rifles will be fine, for many more 4 or 5 will be all they ever really need! shalfordninja33
Countryman of Derby have a .338 Lapua by Accuracy International i think that would be ideal for squizzers around feeders or maybe Ratting I spoke to one of the reps on the AI stand at the Shooting Show a few years ago who told me that someone had placed an order for a .338 which they intended to use on reds in Scotland. When I suggested that it would be overkill he replied with 'some of those beg red stags need some stopping' I imagine the meat damage would be fairy extensive. welshwarrior
.243 not enough gun for reds... If you mean red deer your wrong it will kill them fine with a well placed bullet. I'm not a 243 fan but it's perfectly capable of kill big reds with the right bullet. How would you rather be shoot 243 though the heart or a 416 in the legs. Placement not displacement is the key to clean kills.
