pigeon controller
I was out on my own on Friday and had been requested to shoot the corvids on the barley. when I arrived at the field it had approx two hundred corvids feeding hard in one corner with a few pigeons flying over . I decided to shoot the lower field and put a rope banger on the upper field . I had two crows and six pigeons to set up with and was set up for 12.00. The crows lifted with the first shot like a murmuration of starlings or a flock of pigeons lifting off the rape in winter. Nothing returned for an hour and in this time the rope banger was doing its job on the other field. I had a few pigeons come and committ to the decoys and a very few crows to the others. When I packed up I'd arranged to meet Bunny Blaster in the gateway to the estate as he wanted some decoys ( not bad at a pound each ) and we could see the crows on the wheat , all I've done is move them onto the wheat. So I ended the day with twentynine pigeons and seventeen corvids. Saturday was normal shooting with DB and as I drove over to pick him up I had a text from a farmer who said he had problems with pigeons on his barley . So we headed straight out to his farm and we found the field with about four hundred birds down in one corner with laid barley. So we had to walk the gear the length of the field to the corner they wanted to be and set up. We put out two magnets and eight fresh birds from the day before and waited. When we walked them off they went over a ridge to the next valley . It took at least and hour for them to start returning but it was the right position to shoot from with the wind, sun and flightline but a difficult positon as you had to to shoot the birds so they dropped in the laid area and not over the hedges to the sides or rear. This caused you to pull off some shots which otherwise you would have taken. We had set up at 12.00 and shot till 19.00 and due to the amount of flies we did not lay them out for a picture as they had been in carp sacks flyblow free. During the afternoon another pair of shooters set up on another field on our flightline and we had a walking shooter on the ridge which the birds were coming from. We ended the day with one hundred and seventysix which with different circumstances would have been a three hundred bird day. I would like to think that the shooters who set up on our flightline did it though ignorance rather than malicious intent. Those who are aware that I believe in Karma will be interested to find that the walker on the ridge stood on their flightline and they packed up and went after approx ninety minutes. You will be aware that this post is later than normal but I had to wait for my computor expert to come for his Sunday roast to tame my PC into working for me. JDog
Very good, and all picked without a dog I presume. If you had two static and one mobile shooter along the line, how far do you think the pigeons were travelling to get to your field?

Hi JDog, the next valley is all grass with a wood on the ridge I would think they were travelling approx four to five miles. The two shooters where in sight of us approx one thousand meters. kippylawkid
Classy on all levels as usual. Your patience with the flight line bandits is admirable.
Wilts#Dave
Great result PC, 176 is plenty to be carrying off the field on your back! The other shooters thing is very frustrating, we had similar on Saturday when a fellow shooter turned up and proceeded to fire at everything within 100yards, stood along the hedge in the next field over.
