oowee
That was an horrific crash. The course should be safer. We want to see competition not injuries. Apparently she is off to hospital but could so easily be dead.

oowee
Racing yes knowing the risks yes but some basic precautions would avoid unnecessary risks. As Olympians they have little choice over the course after four years of training. The organisers have a duty of care.

four-wheel-drive
I have to admit that I thought that having those concrete gulleys ether side of the road looked a bit unsafe look what happened with the mens race in the dry god knows what carnage would have happened if it had been wet. Also why did the men have to go up and down those hills three times when the women only had to do it once I would have thought twice was enough for the men to do it in all the men did 230k while the women only did 130k it does not seem fare to me. walshie
They might know racing is dangerous. Does that mean it's alright if she nearly killed herself? Hope she recovers a.s.a.p.
hedge
From what I've been told, broken ribs, collapsed lung and broken collar bone. May not be 100% accurate. Chris Boardman has been very vocal about the course and how dangerous it is, for the men and women. Some things can be avoided or risk of injury reduced and that course was considered to be a serious incident waiting to happen. Hope she makes a speedy recovery. iano
Concussion and fractures, according to the BBC. Lucky girl to get way with just that.
Dekers
So who is the arbiter between challenging and dangerous? It is the Olympics, that is generally accepted as the TOP level. Was she unlucky or the rest lucky, they all seemed to get round the corner? Hope she is ok! Edited August 8, 2016 by Dekers
norfolk dumpling
I gather she's doing ok now and the most serious injuries are 3 small fractures to her spine. Crashes occur regularly in road racing but this course with those big gullies along 90% of the course were an added problem. This is however bankrupt Brazil so we have to accept the limitations or not compete.

Was she unlucky or the rest lucky, they all seemed to get round the corner? Hope she is ok! She was the leader and trying to make a break so possibly going a bit faster than was safe on that corner, All those following would have been warned or flagged that there was an incident at that corner so would have been going a lot slower at that point..... Just my unqualified opinion
Penelope
I feared she had broken her back the way she landed on the kerb stone and didn't move. Bu far the worst crash that I have seen in cycling. That was an horrific crash. The course should be safer. We want to see competition not injuries. Apparently she is off to hospital but could so easily be dead.
panoma1
I think I saw the back wheel of her bike slewing/skidding just prior to her coming off which would indicate her braking (or her rear wheel loosing grip?) perhaps because she thought she was overshooting the bend? she was going at a hell of a lick...so pushing it too hard cannot be ruled out as the cause (as with the men's race?) the cyclists who took it easier got through it safely and finished the race. Relieved to hear she will be OK! it was a horrific crash!
andrewluke
i'm pretty sure most of the cyclists got around with no problems, you will always get an accident or two!

iano
She hit the rear brakes as she was coming into the bend and the bike lost grip, she then hit the brakes up front and the bike lost it. I also thought she had a mechanical or something coming in to the corner but from the slowmos, it looks like she was going a bit too hard and the brakes lost it. islandgun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyxgToqzKR0 cheers, I thought he was you would think he might have offered his coat to cover her up, probably thought there was a few braziliian R$ to be made
toxo
Wouldn't have cost much to put foam covers over those curbs, even just the adverse camber bends. Hope she recovers ok.
