Danger-Mouse
There was a great story about him on an episode of QI. The American Government wanted to buy the land upon which their embassy (at Grosvenor Square) was based. The Duke agreed to sell it if the American Gov. would return land his family had had confiscated from them during the War of Independence. The deal was turned down because the American Gov. was unwilling to hand back the state of Virginia.

Scully
Not an old man by any means. A bloke I know was beating on a grouse moor in the Pennines a lot of years ago now, where he was one of the guns. He insisted on walking uphill to one of the butts during the day and it was harder work than he had realised. This bloke walked past him, and as he did so put his hand on his shoulder and said ' You alright mate? You look *********!' Following the next drive the keeper approached him and told him to leave. He was never asked back.
B25Modelman
He bought one of the first 1976 Aston Martin Lagonda's. He could probably have bought the company.

wisdom
A friend of mine used to beat on his estate at Abbystead.Had nothing but praise for him and his keepers on a very well kept traditonal estate.Rip

scolopax
The grouse moor anecdote does not ring true? The quote is from a lot of years ago, well the Duke was a military man, at the time if the incident you can guess he was in his prime, ie only 64 now, so I would presume he would have been fit and perfectly able to climb a hill without getting breathless. Velocette
Have a look at the book by Michael Twist,,"The Ducal Years" for a vivid account of the previous Dukes life. Quite and outstanding man.

On the other hand: http://www.westminsterfoundation.org.uk/ I'm afraid his death means nothing to me but if you find my comments distasteful, then in the name of balance didn't he once pay the poll tax on behalf of his entire estates staff? keg
Like the royals, he had no choice about who he was born to. On here, we are very pro H4H and the armed forces in general. The Duke was a huge part of the territorials, fought their and started as a trooper. That makes him a decent bloke in my eyes. Heard a socialist jealous petty idiot on the JV show on radio 2 having a go. Just showed how full of spite and poison he was. Chris Bb
didn't he once pay the poll tax on behalf of his entire estates staff? I would imagine that the death duties on umpteen billion would pay all our poll tax for some time to come! Doubtless "his" money is tied up in trusts etc. to keep HMRC well at bay. It was a swamp when the family bought it in fairness. Ah, but they had the nouse not to part with it for a couple of hundred years. That's how you make your money, long term investment.
