lurchers
I lost my guns about a year ago because of my youngest stepson and the firearms woman said I couldn't keep the guns in the house because of what he had been charged with.i explained that nobody had access to the digital safe to get the keys for the gun cabinet, but she insisted that the guns could not stay in the house.i asked her where I should put them then and her reply was I don't know but not in your house.anyway I said ok I will sell them then and she replied I didn't have to do that but as she kept reply when I asked her where I should put them with the answer I don't know but not in your house this was the only resort I had.now I got a call on Friday saying off a different officer I could of kept them in the house because I had a key safe didn't go down well with me after getting rid of them as I had known where else to store them.she says the other girl should of told me this to start with and I told her I had lost a fortune on the guns as I knew off the officer who renewed my license would of took them if I hadn't sold 2 the same day the 1st call came, and explained I even bought a new cabinet 2wks before they went so I lost even more money.ive been told I would be able to claim some compensation off them because of them money I lost out on off my guns that I let go cheap to shift them as I could of kept them.does anyone know how this stands as I would like to have another bullet Gun and 1 shot gun as I've mist out on shooting for a year because of these.sorry to ramble on but I just want some advice many thanks. wandringstar
sounds illegal, being punished for someone else's misdemeanour, but then I don't know the details. wouldn't it have been better to have asked him to leave the property? I will never be punished for someone elses offence.
panoma1
BASC if your a member, if not seek legal opinion! Have you got evidence that proves the first FEO advised you as you claim?
HDAV
Lurches seems you got some bad advice or no advice, were you at the time a member of BASC etc? Are you still? I suggest you get some professional advice from a specialist if you intend to make a claim for compensation. Can't see you have anywhere to go, with this. Start with BASC.
12gauge82
What did your son in law do? If he's been convicted of a violent offence I can't blame them for not allowing you to keep guns in the house, while I feel very sorry for you, the risk of a violent person getting hold of a gun is too grater risk in my opinion. Of course it depends on what he did and if he lives at the property.
ips
Should have signed them over to a mate then "borrowed them" when required. Or pay minimal amount for rfd to store them.
HDAV
Was your FAC revoked? Or do you still have it? Revocation must be done in writing, but without paper proof i think would Be spending more money than you recover unless you had a very good and cheap Lawyer (unlikely)
Davyo
See you come under County Durham lol,its a lottery with their firearms officers.I had them in my house twice in one day, they had empty slips ready to a take my guns.Their reason was 'association 'my son was with a mate who was a mate of badun. My son had to prove he wasn't associated with this guy and that he was just stood with his other mate. HOWEVER some years later my son turned into a right nasty price of work, the first time he threatened me i handed in his FAC/SGC,the firearms officer asked if I felt compromised and at that point I said no.The guns are only taKen out when he goes off to collage and are back in the safe before he comes back.Or if I'm foxing they are out with me late evening and back in the safe early doors as son as I'm home. One day he came home early as I was unloading the car and I got a bit of abuse and I did feel compromised. That afternoon I arranged for my guns to collected by my RDF and the next day the FAC/SGC was surrendered,to be fair they did ask if I'd like to keep them and arrange to keep guns with a friend or down the farm. This to me was to much of an inconvenience for everyone. My relationship with my son has since changed for the better but I felt the action I took at the time was my responsability as a licence holder. My advise to anyone that has some sort of conflict withina household is to be open and honest it's your responsibility. Dougy
I read these kind of posts and then look at the slating that some of the Shooting organisations posts get about lack of value for money. Lurcher its a shame that you did not seek advice from any one of the professionals. I would not have liked to have been in your boots over that issue. Best of luck getting any compensation. daveboy
Most people in authority back down when you ask them to put it in writing. Emails can be a godsend in situations like this.
Vince Green
Its all very random, because its all based on the individual FEO's assessment. I got a big telling off for not telling them when I got divorced a few years back. I had already put them in storage otherwise I feel sure they would have taken them. Then when I got myself sorted out I got a lot of bad vibes at my new inspection of the new house before I could get them out of storage. . nagantino
The police assess a threat by looking at the people who occupy the house, not just the FAC holder. Many never think of this but it's how the police see it. It's not unreasonable to check this. Police can be unreasonable though and sometimes try it on, hoping you will fold, so, as someone has mentioned, getting it in writing will give a policeman pause for thought. My shooting buddy had a particularly difficult evening: his father died of a heart attack at home. The police turned up wanting to remove his firearms. He had the presence of mind to go ballistic. They backed down.

steveshoots
In these situations its very hard to see you getting any compensation .I hate to see a fellow shooter out of pocket on bad advise but greater still missing out on a years shooting . Man that sucks big time but what I will say is that BASC in any situation is worth there weight in gold and as such It's worth every penny to be a member of such a powerful organisation. Good luck in your endevours whatever they may be ATVB Steve.

fieldwanderer
I've been wondering about this sort of thing recently. I've been with my girlfriend since the end of summer, it's going well and thankfully she's not worried about me shooting cute fluffy animals - even been out pinking with me a couple of times. However, she's suffered quite badly with depression and attempted to take her own life a couple of times. I think having me around has had a very positive effect but obviously this is something that I need to tactfully bear in mind. She's started talking about marriage (😲 don't do it, I hear you cry!). So, all my guns are still at my parents' house, I'm assuming it would be best if that's where they remain - or am I still likely to have a rough time with plod? It wouldn't be the rough time with the plod I'd worry about but the safety of your girlfriend, leave the guns out of her reach if it was me, really hope she conquers her issues. Paul223
digital safe to get the keys for the gun cabinet I'd not be relying on a digi safe to keep your cabinet keys in, to be honest in your situation I'd say the police officer was correct if that's all the protection you could afford the keys to the cabinet. What would you suggest? Surely a safe is a great place to keep keys, especially of the safe is hidden. Or were you being sarcastic and I missed it? Would you take the risk with your partners life if she had issues with suicidal thoughts, I certainly wouldn't, picking the guns up from his father's seems a small price to pay for piece of mind imho.
