hankook1
when it come to choice i was just wondering what you guys prefer to shoot between a o/u or a s/a and why !
sishyplops
Depends on what you're shooting, I prefer s/a for most things except game , I only used two very similar chokes such as 1/4 & 3/8 in my o/u so put either one or the other in my beretta semis
wymberley
Get a roll of toilet paper and something that will write on it. This for writing a list of the pros and cons of a self loader using one sheet for each point. Tear off one sheet which is for the pros and begin. Wingman
Never got on that well with SA had a benelli M2 couldn't hit a thing with it so definitely an OU for me. Or even better a side by side but that's another story.
Rst1990
I use o/u for everything now, reason why is the carts spitting out everywhere I do a lot of rough shooting and diving in a bramble bush to grab the spent carts lost its appeal. motty
I prefer a semi for use on the pigeons, ducks and geese. The extra shot can make all the difference.
Davyo
Semi for me the perfect roost gun don't take your eye of the sky and just keep shoving one up the spout. No breaking a barrel in a tight hide either.Once I tried a semi the o/u got sold. bostonmick
o/u everytime.i dont need the extra shot.
Danger-Mouse
For pigeons, definitely the semi. As Davyo said it's much easier to use in the hide and you have the extra shot. For clays I don't mind either.
TIGHTCHOKE
Semi-Auto for Pigeons O/U for Clays SxS for Game
Davyo
It's not about the extra shot it's the practability of the gun itself when your stood in a roost back against a tree and just slipping one up the spout.I remember shooting a copse about an acre in size I was on the edge and my mate was in the middle,I could hear them barrels on the o/u snap shut every time. lancer425
In the confines of a hide semi auto is my prefered choice, the extra shot is of negligable merit in my view but that along with lower felt recoil in most autos is not on offer in the over and unders. I like over and unders for clays and some wildfowling sittuations but on game i use side by sides exclusively.

I've never done any roost shooting but that makes total sense. The extra shot is nice though. Tough to bag a triple with an O&U.
SuperGoose75
Been involved in Shooting most of my life and never have felt the need or urge to own a S/A. I have shot with one but never have or probably never will own one.
hankook1
just wondering as someone advised me to wear eye protection when shooting a s/a especially when facing the wind do to the possibility of debris from the fired cartridge hitting you in the face . Can't say I've ever noticed, but then again I almost always wear glasses when I'm shooting, be it clays or pigeons.
Davyo
I'm now retired from shooting but if they banned semi auto's I'd stop shooting rather than go back to a break barrel.
WinchesterDave
Depends what it is you're shooting really. But currently I prefer my OU simply because it's a pain in the neck searching for and picking up empties! However, as has been said, an auto is great for everything other than game shooting. Wilts#Dave
The only downside for me is picking up empties from stinging nettles/brambles when I'm decoying......apart from that I love a s/a for pigeon shooting, much easier to load in a hide, I like the smoother recoil and the extra shot whilst not essential by any means can come in handy. What's even more handy is being able to shove another up the spout quickly when you've had a shot or two and there's another bird coming! motty
A semi auto is a better "bag filler".
chrispti
Never quite shot a semi auto as well as a decent o/u... plus picking up all the empties after a good day on the pigeons used to **** me off....
db135
For me now Sx3 Semi auto for everything Side by side pheasants
Wb123
Ive not liked semis each time i have shot one. The empties flying out the side and all the extra noise and vibration of the action working put me off. I have a bps pump i love to bits though, drops the empties between your feet and cycles smoothly when you want it to. If you want something that feeds without breaking it open one might be just the job. Edited February 19, 2017 by Wb123
washerboy
Only shot a semi auto twice, once at clays badly and once at pigeons... even worse So for me it's my el cheapo Spanish o/u
