lord_seagrave
Up until three years ago I was cycling 12 miles a day on my commute (ten years ago I was in the best shape of my life and cycling 16 miles a day), and despite the London traffic and air pollution trying to kill me, I felt pretty good in it. However, my new job is mostly working from home at a desk, and when I do venture into the City it is for big lunches and dinners. I have noticed some weight gain, but my main concern is that I get a bit out of breath climbing stairs whilst lugging my 3-year-old son. I have almost no appetite for exercise for its own sake, but something must now be done. It therefore has to be easy and cheap, and I thought I might resolve to go for a run a couple of times a week. As those of you who have met me know, I don't really 'do' trainers. I have long, narrow feet (12D), and I don't when to spend a fortune, so what do I do? Any recommendations before I end up getting bent over at the local 'trainers R us'? LS
ph5172
I have literally 10s of pairs of trainers, Light weight road running right through to trail trainers with various price tags. Believe it or not the old Hi-TEC silver shadows are not too bad, they were voted best budget trainer for years in Runners World, I do believe they won the London Marathon a few times (back in the 80s?) Your best bet may be to pop to a specialist running shop when you are next in the city and speak to them, they will fit you properly and it may cost you a few quid but it would be money well spent, i would buy the trainers there, whilst they may be cheaper online you are paying for the gait analysis, fitting and spotting back on the machine when you have found a pair suitable.... you can't get that mail order or in JJB. If you get on with them then by all means stock up mail order but that extra few quid for the first pair is well worth it. On a side note i was away last week and forgot my trainers so bought a cheap pair of Asics... by back was in termoil from the off and by the end of the week i just didnt want to go out in them... they are going to get used for gardening!! Lloyd90
Used to run 10 miles most mornings before work when I was preparing to join the RAF. I could run a mile in under 5 mins flat out and would often run 5 miles to boxing, box and then run home. Wish I'd never stopped running, get out of puff doing the 1 mile round the park by my house now and takes longer than 5 mins that's for sure 😂. My cousin and me used to just look up good brands online and buy ones on sale.
toontastic
Back in my army days we had hi-tec silver shadows on issue, they served me well on many a run. My feet are also long and narrow (I'm a 12) and I've always found hi-tec comfortable. Edited July 21, 2017 by toontastic
Davyo
My wife is 50 and she is addicted to running.Runs every other day (somtimes does a little 5 miler but usually 8/12 mile runs) with palata's when not running. She spends about a £100 on shoes & has different ones for trail. She goes and gets some type of insole £45 that she can put in any of her running shoes. She stands on a machine that measures weight placement and other stuff. They then make custom inserts for her.She reckons that these are just as important as her choice of shoe. The nutter done a 37 miler(ultra) last weekend with her running club. Mice!
Id say forget the trainers for me you only run if your being chased, get a decent bike seat for your lad and get out on the bike, Halfords are half price at the moment we were looking at new ones this week. My reason for not running is I cant without a rugby ball i end up injured because of the way I run, do any effort at getting fit goes straight down the pan
ips
Like mice I would only run if something was about to eat me, I wouldn't even run for a bus. I once tried running when the Mrs and I were on a keep fit regime about 15 yrs ago and I found it to be the most boring thing to do. We took up mountain biking which was much more fun. I used to go to the gym pretty much every evening twenty odd years ago and was very fit then but it was mainly to avoid the first Mrs nutcase. The fittest I have ever been was probably when I was fencing three times a week.
Alex C
The most important thing is that they fit properly. Get measured and have your gait checked. I use New Balance from an outlet store, usually pay about £

Benthejockey
Since my lower leg bones decided to divide I can't run and won't be able to for the foreseeable future so I've taken to swimming. I've never been a great swimmer - I can swim but my technique is **** and I find it hard work. I very quickly built up to swimming 5 days a week and at least two of those days I swim a mile. It's been very good for me! My fitness has improved even with a partially healed leg. And you don't need fancy trainers.

Fabhui
Go to a specialist to get fitted and they'll point you in the right direction. My personal preference and what was recommended to me is New Balance which cost me about £40.

team tractor
If your saying your out of breath I'd be getting tested for asthma . Seriously it's free and makes sense. I was in my peak 10 years ago and a year or so after I stopped racing mx/ enduro I noticed I was out of breath. I was only 25 but thought I'd go docs anyway. They tested me and I was shocked . Lung age 80+ lol

My lads at work blew 52 years old at age 18 . They'd only been in the trade 3-4 months at the time but it scared the one into buying his own mask that he wears constantly. We supply masks but he's bought a top line one .
loriusgarrulus
Why not go cycling again. Less impact on your joints.
lord_seagrave
Thanks all - my problem with cycling is that it's too much of a faff to get the bike out. In the old days it was a means to an end and saved me the bus fare. I tried "leisure" cycling, and found it very dull without the competition with other commuters! To my fedble man brain, there was no incentive. I reckon I need as few barriers to exercise as possible, and that includes time. I reckon that twenty minutes of running will very nearly kill me at the moment, so I won't ever be too far from the house! Thanks for the replies, all. I'll swing by the running shop in MK next Friday and see what they recommend. Lady Seagrave has some sort of weird arch thing and needed insoles, so I suppose I ought to try and get it right first time. I'll let you know how I get on. yod dropper
Not knowing your physical condition I can't say what to do but I would consider the following. My brother is doing a couch to 5k program and the results have been spectacular. His rather unfit lady is doing it as well. Check it out on the web. The quickest route to fitness is interval training (****lek) and it's a proven way to shift weight, you'll work the muscles and your heart and lungs. I changed my fitness regime as it wasn't working for me. I stopped the longer 30 min runs to about 20 mins. They no longer feel a burden and I'm out and back before I've really had time think about going, it just seems to happen. I alternate between ****lek and steady state and vary the route and distance to stop me getting bored. You might well find 10 mins is sufficient, you really don't have to overdo it. As most of my running is off road I bought some Nike flextrail which were £50 though that was perhaps 5 years back. Edit: the **** is a differently spelt version of 'frat'. JDog
I would only wear trainers if I was going to a fancy dress party. As for getting fitter, get out shooting a bit more. Carrying the kit, setting up the hide and decoys, picking birds then repeating the process will burn off the calories and excercise muscles you didn't know you had. team tractor
I'm still amazed people think it's a fitness thing. As said already, get your lungs tested before physical training. If your all good then crack on 👍
deadeye18
The army issue Hi tec silver shadow are a good neutral trainer and not expensive. As for training it's always good to learn a skill while exercising so id recommend boxing and calisthenics.
