Apart from traveling any distance to your shooting grounds , would you still be able to go shooting by yourself as a form of exercise ?

don’t think so, unless it is your job.

Exercising and meeting other people

You should minimise time spent outside your home.

It is against the law to meet socially with family or friends unless they are part of your household or support bubble. You can only leave your home to exercise, and not for the purpose of recreation or leisure (e.g. a picnic or a social meeting). This should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area.

Guys I am a senior M+E engineer at a North London hospital that was designated to be a dirty (covid)   hospital at the start of last year.   It is one of the hospitals in the Royal free trust that was filmed for that tv series on the hospitals.   I had covid early last year and still have a cough from it now.    Whilst I realise that it is a big inconvenience for people to not be able to carry out their normal activities / lives.  The first time around the virus was mainly putting people in the hospital in the 45-50 plus range that were unhealthy.   This time around it is people my age in the 20 to 39 category. And it is spreading quickly my hospital is struggling badly and the lock down are to stop the spread so that the hospitals can cope with the influx of people.  And the reason the hospitals are struggling is because people are visiting friends and family and passing it on without knowing it and also because around 50%  of the nursing staff are off sick with it or are self isolating.    Honestly unless you see what it is like for someone that has it you would never understand so I appreciate why people don't believe in it or don't take it seriously.  The problem is you may catch it and be fine or even have no symptoms,   or you could catch it and end up very very ill or even die.   Its the viral load that dictates this and you cannot tell how much exposure you have because of the nature of it.   So please everyone all of the NHS are exhausted.   The holidays were cancelled and the nursing staff in ITU are still having nightmares at night.  Stay at home and look after yourselves   you can go shooting next year if we all live through this

This ,as at the start.

I think he is 'requesting' from tonight ...... but legal bit not until after Parliament meets on Wednesday?  Make of that what you will.

The Coronavirus Act 2020 gives Boris the emergency powers to make what ever rules/laws he wants. If he is deferring to Parliament its only a gesture to have it rubber stamped

Good post

A good friend of ours was a ward assistant on a maternity ward at a South London hospital . She was moved to help on the death ward. (Thats what they call it). Yesterday she was washing and bantering with two women in their 40s both very ill but alert enough for a conversation.

Today both are dead, Our friend is giving in her notice tomorrow at her husband's insistence. This is not what she signed up for

I understand why he wants her to do that it's not good for your mental health to be around that much death and suffering.   My wife is a paramedic and she struggles sometimes

Thank you for contributing some real life direct information.  Very helpful to have a direct view, and I sincerely hope people take note and act with appropriate care and caution ......... and follow the rules.

Piers Corbyn should be locked up for spreading lies.

Apart from spreading opinions that are regarded as completely false by the vast majority of the respected scientific community .......... he is also a serial law breaker re Covid rules.  IF people still will not follow the law despite being arrested and fined ........ then firmer action should be taken.  His views are putting lives at risk ........ just as much as other law breaking activities do.

What did she sign up for if not to help fight illness, diseases and injury?

Imagine if everyone in the military who joined in peace time quit as soon as a war came about, ooh it’s not what I signed up for...

I’m “happy” to manage in a lockdown, but haven’t we all been under restrictions of one sort or another for 10 months. Infections rose under tier 4 so we are pretty much doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Either lockdowns don’t work or non compliance is rife so it’s time for a change.

Many thanks for clarifying the situation

In the first lockdown we were told we had to self isolate as me and my wife were over 70 , to begin with we could have a hour each day for exercise and you had to walk wherever you were going , then they lifted the limit of an hour on exercise and you could travel in your motor as long as it was local , I did hear at the time you could travel the distance you took your walk or your dog , how right this was ? , I am not really sure , at the time the shooting season had finished so it was only pest control , our wildfowling club wasn't sure what was what so they put a blanket ban on shooting pigeons on the land that they rented , which was lifted at a later date .

Now when we had the last four week lockdown it was in the shooting season and we were still allowed rough shooting and wildfowling as long as you stuck to the rules of keeping it local and not going with more than one other person , then after a short while this ruling was lifted and we entered the tier system and in the lower tiers the game shooting restarted until we jumped from tier two straight into tier four and then it stopped again.

Now from today we are entering another full lockdown although this time Boris didn't mention the over 70s have got to self isolate and as far as I know we have got to keep the exercise down to the minimum .

So no doubt the shooting organisations will soon put us right as far as wildfowling and pest control go in this currant lockdown .

To be honest I'd try and get out as often and safely as you can, I've just lost my dad to cancer and due to isolating on his own and unable to go out and socialise (he had an active social life pre lockdown) by the time the restrictions had eased he had deteriorated to the point he could only walk with assistance (walking stick) but then after the second lockdown it got to the point he needed assistance to get in his car (as a passenger as he was no longer safe to drive), Covid wasn't to blame for his death but it certainly aided in the deterioration of his muscles by having to 'isolate'.

If we assume that the various worldwide experts are right the virus spreads almost totally through direct person to person (i.e. contact, droplets, recently exhaled breath) - then you can see why a lockdown which prevents people meeting 'should' work.

There is a risk of transmission from surfaces, but most experts agree that this is more theoretical than actual and probably only accounts for a small to very small portion of transmissions.  Those will be further reduced by handwashing and precautionary cleansing/sanitising, plus quarantining of main, parcels, and goods if you are being really careful.

I don't see much non compliance - but then I'm very compliant - and so would be unlikely to see it - but there does seem to be a lot pictured in the media/papers.  Not sure in truth how prevalent it really is?

What I do see is quite a lot with either masks below the nose - or not worn ......... there seem to be a remarkably large percentage who have 'medical reasons' for not wearing them.

She signed up to work in the maternity ward obviously,  so to be working with expecting mothers and babies,  I've added the description because you obviously didn't realise what maternity means.

Don’t babies sometimes die? I would have thought that would be very distressing.

It's a shame most don't treat it as seriously as they should.

The only people who should even be thinking about pheasant at the moment are the keepers who need to feed them, yes there are going to be a lot of birds left on the ground,  I'm  sure if the keepers wanted to they could put them in the food chain, but say £1 a brace compared to £20+ for a driven bird its nothing like the same.

They should have probably put less birds down?

We're often told the South east supports the rest of the country, if things are bad there then the lockdown was inevitable.

The problem with the tiers ie 3&4 was people are still coming into contact,  whether its shopping or eating, if the Trafford centre was at full capacity over the festive break just so people can hit the sales then every other shopping centre in the country was probably the same, not necessary just people getting out shopping.

We know they do, and there are miscarriages but it's still not the same.

Some shoots reduced their prices to £20 per bird some time ago, from almost double that at the start of the season, as an incentive for shooters to take a day. It’s all academic now; no more driven days for this season.

I don’t know any that reduced prices but there were a lot less birds put down this season.  I’m also not sure keepers will keep on feeding birds. They obviously should but I am sure some will say “what’s the point”

I was reading posts by a keeper in Scotland and someone made the point you could still go skiing up till NS announcing the lockdown,  but you couldn't have driven shooting,  so people travelling to Ski was ok?

He was out yesterday feeding.
