New or second hand

Recommended Posts

Hello all, so I’m upgrading my Bettinsoli as it doesn’t really suit me and after a chat in our local gun shop it was decided that the gun doesn’t really fit and needs a fair bit of stock work.
My budget for a replacement is around £1300 most of my shooting is clay with a bit of game I have had a look at an ATA pro which fitted me a lot better and felt a lot more comfortable but then I’m not sure on how it would be after a few years as most of the reviews always end with a great starter gun ! I have found a few nice Brownings 525s/725s  Beretta Silver pigeons in my budget which although old feel nice.

So thought on new ATA or a nice second hand (I feel I may know how this will go but hopefully someone that has an ATA for while may chip in)?

Hello, Browning 525 Sporter ? although i cannot see that the ATA would not last many years if looked after, how much shooting a year ?,

To be fair I don’t get out to shoot a lot, probably a few hundred clay every couple of months.

I would look at a second hand silver pigeon or 525, try and shoot both before buying and see which suits best.

A second hand gun you should be able to shoot before buying.

You’ll get one for under £1000.

For that sort of money you could get a Yilditz pro - Perazzi based action - which are way better than ATA.

Never buy a new gun, they lose money the minute you step out of the shop. You can pick up guns which someone has bought and, for whatever reason, didn't get on with them. Miroku, Beretta, Browning, Fabarm and many more to consider.

Absolutely this. Especially a private sale (there’s plenty). Be picky, I’ve bought plenty and most looked barely used.

Even if you get a 525 that’s done a couple of thousand cart’s its only at the start of its life in real terms. Worn-in but far from worn-out. Buy one that’s been looked after and continue taking care of it. It will serve you well for decades. Let someone else take the hit of the brand new price.

Colchester Essex bud

Worth having a look at Essex gun at Braintree. Very friendly staff and I got a miroku mK60 with little use but a bit of cosmetic knocks for ironically £525 about 18 months ago and they gave me a slip to take it home without me even asking.

I was there on Saturday…. Hence looking for a new gun, they had the ATA pro there but wasn’t happy with the action hard work to cock it, I know it’s new but bloody hell. Going to Eastern sporting Tuesday and Mallard Barn Wednesday as they have more in my budget 👍

another option is a mk38  grd 1 s/h for that money, a lifetime gun. You will wear out before it does.

Just had a Quick Look definitely an option… thanks

Second hand every time. Lots of cabinet queens around. I bought a 525 which was ten years old and not yet shot a full box of cartridges. They are about.

👍

Yes agreed. Browning / Miroku …. same difference. They’ve both stood up well throughout several decades.

It doesn’t matter what you are buying, be it guns, cars, scopes, binoculars or whatever. A better quality secondhand item beats a cheap new one every time.

Have you tried ISS (Independent Shooting Supplies) near Brentwood?
I bought a gun from them a couple of years ago (16 bore Lincoln Jubilee) and was most impressed by the friendly atmosphere and plenty of good banter. Lovely shop.

To be fair both the ATA and the Yildiz get really good write ups.

ATA - Beretta based action, lot of gun for the money, I think around £1200 new?

Yildiz - Perazzi based action, also a lot of gun but quite a bit more expensive new £2k+
