My new found hobby

I am continuing to getting to grips with my gift of a lathe (thanks to my shooting pal Stour boy on here) along with the wonderful help, kindness and encouragement of Shambam1962 who, as you know, shows great skill in all he does with his variable projects being innovative and endless.

Never having used a lathe before I`m now hooked on wood-turning and beginning a very steep learning curve.

I`m clearly not in the same league as Shambam1962, but the pleasure I`m getting from time in the shed, as there are currently no pigeons around here to shoot, is immeasurable.

Attached are a few photos of my latest project of bottle stoppers.

The first ones being pretty basic and then as I get a little bit more proficient and adventurous, some more intricate ones.

Hopefully they will make nice little presents for friends and family.

Thanks for looking.

OB

Well done Chris, those stoppers look very good 👍

Now you have the bug, there will be no stopping you !

I like you had never used a lathe, and I too was gifted a wood lathe and watched YouTube videos for help with the basics and inspiration !

The only one you have to please, is your self, and enjoy using the lathe as a new hobby.

Keep up the good work, and looking forward to the future projects 👍

Evening Bill,

I thought it only right with your username that you should have a bottle stopper👍

Rob,

You won`t regret getting a lathe and wood turning as I`ve recently found out, can be very therapeutic and can become an obsession, but nevertheless a wonderful obsession to have.

Rob,

You realise of course that once you’ve made your first stick you have to post a picture of it for us to see, it’s the rules 😂

Good luck,

One of my best friends has told me thst his father has decided to stop using his lathe and is happy to gift it to me and my sons. To be honest I have never used one but I have another friend who is brilliant on the lathe and has taught my sons how to use it. I am really looking forward to getting it and getting to try and produce something as lovely as the bottle stops.  I am not sure how much time I will have for it between fishing, shooting and keeping bees but I imagine it would be a good job for the dark winter nights.

I was wondering where you get the metal parts for the bottle stoppers? I had a quick look online but to no avail.

Thanks

The bottle stopper metal parts can be purchased online off Temu in multiples of 6 to 25 and are an alloy material and are relatively cheap compared to other sites.

Axminster Tools and Prokraft also sell them but are more expensive !

As regards to finding the time, you will always find time for a hobby you enjoy doing 👍

Thank you. Have never tried Temu but will have a look.

I ha e to admit being a bit selfish with my time. I generally shoot or stalk 3 tines a week during the season then have lots of fishing which brings me all over the country and then have my bee hives which take up a bit of tine too.I have a very understanding wife who accepts most of the madness I get up to and doesn't really get too excited when I head off especially when I bring the boys with me.

Having just spent the best part of three weeks fishing the mayfly at home and further afield, having friends staying in the house and generally having a good time while she was at work I knew things were going ro be tense ( it's the same every year) then she got stung by one of my bees on Sat morning so I really was in the good books last weekend!!
