pigeon controller
Having a look around my area it would appear that we have a low acorn crop this year which either means that the will be on the rape early or move to the woods with a better crop. What is the crop like in your area?
JDog
Very few oaks on this part of the Wolds but I am sure that the pigeons will need no excuses to head to the Forest of Arden.
Salop Matt
Very few here. 2013 we had loads, 2014 we barely had any and last year we had an average amount. Do Oaks go threw growth cycles ?

What is the crop like in your area? you always seem to shoot birds on the rape even when there is a good acorn crop anyway so won't effect you pc lol

stuy
Acorns around my way look to be on for a average harvest, but as noted by others beechmast looks like a bumper harvest, but also less rape this year grown around my patch (south Herefordshire, monmouthshire)
kippylawkid
Huge crops of both acorns and beech mast in North Northumberland.
JDog
Huge crops of both acorns and beech mast in North Northumberland. You will be looking for a winter hobby other than pigeon shooting then.
Adge Cutler
Seems to be normal in these parts... Beech Mast full and well forward, Acorns where I would expect them to be... Loads and Loads of Haws and Hips this year...more than usual in fact.

DEADLY PLUMBER
Acorns are very big this year in South Herts. Not as many, but big. Ive not seen them this big for years. All berrys look good this year.
Cranfield
Acorns are still a bit small in my area, but the beechmast is very evident. I think the acreage of stubbles that are being left over the Winter for Spring drilling, may also distract the pigeons from the rape. Unfortunately, a lot of these stubbles are not on "my" land. Dr D
Birds in my area were showing signs of leaving the stubbles in favour the woods last week. Very few about this week and by the time today had come around they had vanished. Even fresh cut barley was not enough to pull them away from the protein rich calorific banquet on offer now from mother nature. They are well and truly on acorns and beechmast. I probably won't get much in way of shooting for about 6-8 weeks. By then it will be nearly time for the migrants. My favourite time of year for pigeon shooting. Big flocks, full plumage, strong birds that have crossed the sea to escape the winter, strong winds, short days. Can't wait!!!!
Wooder
out with the dog yesterday, near one of my permissions there is a long strip of beech mast, cant shoot it as it is on the estate shoot, we walked past and we put up about 600 birds. explains the absence of birds on the stubble at the moment. JDog
The strong winds which we are experiencing at the moment are bringing down beech mast.
