Car servicing

My OH has just had her car serviced and MOT by these people on recommendation from a friend.

I can only speak as I find, they appear to be very good. The car was collected from her place of work, full service and MOT then returned the same day cleaned and shiny for £117

I checked the oil filters and air filters were new after they brought it back because I am not that silly. It all appears to have been done.

Just read some in depth reviews and I it's same price for every car.I ran my wife's 2016 ecotec fiesta through and my 2011 C3 picasso through and it's exactly the same price.Reviews reveal that this does not (full service) include plugs or specialist oils.Think I would continue to use main dealer with after reading through some reviews.

Some insurance companies for accident repairs are paying the garages £16 an hour. I would think those garages would jump at £117 for a service.

Just had a look. Wife's M3 full service £120. Hahahaha , I don't think so somehow.

Exactly, check the small print all they are doing is an oil change and air filter if your cars petrol. Any special oil is extra fuel filter isn't changed spark plugs are not changed, that's not a full service.

It couldn't have been fully synthetic oil that they put in it . The oil would have cost that much .

Harnser

I use ford low Ash oils, usually because they do offers trying to compete with motor factors and I get that at around £3.10 a litre. Low Ash fully synthetic top spec stuff. I had some merc stuff before that and the only reason I didn't get it again was because I couldn't get hold of any! That was £2.96 or something a litre

My local chap for my Saab...£40 MOT + £15 4ltr fully synthetic, £3.50 oil filter, £7 Air filter....does the oil while he checks the car for the MOT...total cost less than £70. Halfords do an oil sale early each year where most 4 ltr oils are £15 ( £18 for 2 ltr of the same oil instore) - order online and collect at your local branch a couple of days later.

The wife has just had her Mercedes serviced from an approved Merc garage cost £170, Local main dealer wanted £280 this is for a first year service, when we phoned the dealer they said there would be a charge when we hand the car back because we didn't use them for the service, the best of it is the car hasn't even got finance on it and belongs to us so it wont be going back to them anyway.

Total nonsense, even lease companies can't impose charges so long as the service is carried out as per makers requests, some for instance request cabin filters even on the first oil service.

Are they taking the ****,you don't have HP or PCP and they want to charge you if you sell it to them. You can get your car serviced anywhere that is VAT reg and services the car within the manufactures guidelines.I haven't came across a Warrenty book or Service book that came with our new cars that stated you can't.I have heard of Stoneacre tying people in for services with their lifetime warranty where you have to have the car service buy the purchase garage( not even another Stoneacre branch) to keep that warranty valid. But I think it's on their second hand cars only.Wife bought her Ford from Jennings in Gateshead but we get it serviced at Bristol Street Motors (Ford) in Durham as it's closest.Doesnt effect the warranty and if we wanted we could take it anywhere VAT reg according to the service book.

They were just trying it on, it was the wife who phoned and I was there listening, they obviously hadn't even looked to see the car was not on PCP or HP and I already knew that we could take it to a garage of choice as long as they use genuine parts etc. If I had not been there which I'm not a lot of the time as I work away the wife would have believed them and took it there, We had a similar experience with the local Land Rover garage before we bought the Merc but they gave in and done a price a match against the approved Land Rover garage.

It's definitely worth shopping around for service prices as long as they are genuine garages.

I do not understand how it can be so cheep MOT about £40 if they find nothing wrong the cost of oil and filters etc what do they do pay Polish people 50p per hour to do it as most of that money would go on the mot and parts.

MOT is £19, go on Europarts and look up the real cost of parts like oil filters etc for your car and you may be surprised, if you buy them at weekends you can 30% discount.

What these places do is use the cheap service and MOT almost as a loss leader to find extra work to do. They are never ever going to say there is nothing else to do. They are always coming back with "your front pads are a bit low" your discs are scored, brake fluid needs changing etc. "Not a fail but we would advise you to get it done"

Nail on the head! Oil filter is usually around 4 quid and 5 litres of oil can be had for 15 quid. Not a great deal if you think about it

Just checked for the Disco and it's £74 + £19 for an MOT

It's worth doing it just to get a head to toe report on the car let alone the oil and filter changes.

I'm sure you could negotiate paying the difference on specific oils and parts if you wanted.
