shawn9914
Hi All I am after a decent second hand scope to go on my new 22lr but not sure what to go for I know its all personal preference but what mag would you go for on a rimfire I am looking at 4-16 x 50 and 6-24 x 50 both with adjustable side parallax I will use the rifle for both day and night shooting using my nitesite wolf rtec at night whats your thoughts on these mags
snipers eye
i use a hawke 4-16x50,works well in day, and night with my diy night vision, 6-24 would be ok too,but for a .22lr,that much mag is really not needed, unless your after the fleas on the rabbits
welshwarrior
4x36 and 6x42.
Ultrastu
A lot depends on the reticule it has .and how the marks /dots .marry up with different ranges
Walker570
I have a basic Hawke 4 to something ..not a lot with a the dots on the reticule but I have to admit old ways take some getting ignored and I still judge hold over by eye. If you want a really spart scope have a look at the Hawke Airmax range, I have three of their scopes and they all work very well, two on air rifles and one on a 17HMR. Pretty good light gathering as well.

Oh mine are all Schmidt and Benders
team tractor
When I shot FT I used to use 10-50x60 but I was important for the range finding. i now use 10x at up to 500 yards . my shooting has totally changed . I shoot on 8 mag on my hmr now
Dunkield
Keep it simple and use fixed mag I had a Hawke 3-9x50 on mine originally then swapped it for a 7x50 Meopta - IMO it's perfect for the job.
Ultrastu
Clearly a waste of time asking as every one has totally different ideas
Breastman
Saying what type of shooting you're going to be doing is going to get you more accurate answers (pun intended).
Dekers
I tend to use 6x on everything I own, even though all my scopes are capable of far more, useful for scanning around in the distance sometimes. Does me up to 200 yards no problem at all, seldom have the need to go much past that with any rifle I use in the field.
zipdog
You will not need x24 mag on a 22lr. Save your money on magnification and buy better glass. I have a 3-9x40 on mine 22 lr but it rarely comes off 6. The link below would be my choice. https://www.opticswarehouse.co.uk/product/vortex-crossfire-ii-3-9x50-riflescope/
Dazza9t9
I have the Hawke subsonic vantage 3-9 on mine and I love it.... however I am changing it for the Hawke subsonic vantage 4-12. For me I just wanted a slight bit more than the 9 in some circumstancs 99.9% I will use 8 anyway it’s my ocd I think
clakk
Redfield Revenge 3-9x42 on mine and Dazza ocd must be infectious mine lives 6x for most outings
Uilleachan
4x or 6x 30/30 reticule, low light think quality glass perhaps stuck on the ends of a 30mm tube.
jcbbracken
6x42 number 4 reticle meopta Edited March 15, 2018 by jcbbracken
Wb123
I had a 6-18x40 bsa sweet 22 on my 22lr, I replaced it with an ancient S&B 6x42 and much prefer the latter. At night with the lamp on low the clarity is amazing. If you want the scope that came off it is just gathering dust, and is missing one turret cap. I cant imagine ever using it again, if someone somewhere is starting out and after a scope with plenty of bells and whistles (adjustable parralax, magnification, and changable ballistic turrets) they can have it for cost of postage. 39TDS
Had a 6x42 on mine for the last 40 years and never felt I wanted something different.
Ultrastu
Well my mate shoots his .22 lr in comps and the field out to 100 yds .and he uses 30x mag . Gun groups around an inch at 100 yds . This isnt possible on 9x mag . So depends on your uses . Personally for me hunting out to around 80 yds id use 14 x mag .
sako751sg
All personal taste and all my scopes have big mags. The 17HMR has a Zeiss 6-24x56 and the .22 a Nikko Stirling,i think with the same credentials.

I think with better glass it’s easily do able. i used 10 at 500 yards at Xmas. No problem . At 100 yards I can use 10 mag for 1inch groups and I’ve managed .6 inch groups. i don’t like the extra mag now . I always used to tho
