akka
I thought I'd have a go making a priest. So I found a dry (ish) oak branch and had go at turning something. Now I dont have a wood lathe, so I improvised, using my bench grinder. So any regular wood turners out there will be mortified at the abomination I'm going to show you! But the result was pretty good, I'm happy with it. More pics to follow......
akka
It turned down down pretty well just using standard wood chisels. But to get the radius cuts, I ground up an old screwdriver which worked a treat.
akka
So to put a bit of weight at the tip, I got an old bit of brass I found while walking the dog. I'm not sure but think it might be the safety cap from a mortar? I find quite a few of these while out with the dog. It polished up really nice. akka
The cartridge base in the bottom has special meaning to me, It was the first ever fox I shot. A bit of Danish oil to finish it off, not too shabby i hope. Just need a leather strap to put through as a lanyard. Old Boggy
That is a good looking and functional priest. It just goes to show what can be achieved with a bit of imagination, both the method and the result. Thanks for sharing and makes me want to try something similar and like you without a lathe. johnphilip
Great job , I can see you buying a lathe , they are very addictive , the turnings are like hypnotherapy relaxing . Enjoy .

Stimo22
I turn some with brass end and some with stainless. The light one is a bit of box wood and lead filled
akka
Very nice. How do you attach the brass/steel ends on? I used araldite.
Stimo22
I drill and tap one end and then put a bit of thread in them. Drill a hole in the wood and then glue them together. I have both a metal and a wood lathe so easy to make. I give them away to guns on shoots , just keeps me out of mischief
akka
I can see the appeal of a wood lathe now. I may have to put one on my Christmas list.

Walker570
I've made a few for friends and I drill out the end and lead fill. May glue in a rifle cartridge case head for a finish. Can't fault that for a first time try.
