Rob85
Is it barrelled? I've seen something like that with a flat piece and short barrel, the flat piece holds the barrel at the correct angle for euthanizing an animal like a horse etc
JKD
Looking at the shape of it, it's got to be a horse shoe former ?

Stephen-H
Cast iron bog brush with the bristles missing? ( I actually know what it is as I follow the same page on Instagram 😂 )
malmick
It's a humane cattle and horse killer. The stirrup over the top covers a firing pin that is hit with a wooden truncheon. You can see the firing pin under the stirrup. The breech assembly unscrews and a .310 (or .32 cartridge if converted) goes in the chamber. JKD
Sad to make it in the shape of a horses hoof, IMO

On ones made by others that I've seen the "bell" is a gunmetal colour and the tube blued steel. When sold I think they came with a hardwood mallet as an optional extra. The purpose of the odd, or rather NOT odd angle, on the bell is to make sure that the bullet has a correct trajectory through the skull of the animal. https://www.aniodhlann.org.uk/object/2000-212-1/ http://www.deactivated-guns.co.uk/images/uploads/310bell/1bell310-1960.JPG Edited March 22, 2023 by enfieldspares
manton
The bell was angled so that the bullet would go through the brain and into the spinal cord . Greener described the bell as an early type of sound moderator . This humane killer was used by vets for many years untill the captive bolt gun was introduced and deamed to be safer. (I always thought it was something a lisper said, instead of urinating 😂 ”Pithing is a technique designed to cause death by increasing the destruction of brain tissue. It is performed by inserting a pithing rod or tool through the entry site produced in the skull by the penetrating captive bolt stunner.” Learn something new every day! The pithing rod goes down into the "pith" (we would call it the "marrow") of the internal hole that carries this inside the spinal column where it joins the skull. Scrapie on a stick!
