Sceptical as I am of the work they do, watching this puts their job into perspective. Credit where its due I would not do what they do day in day out. Allegations and Racist and the courts why bother you can see why the numbers are leaving every police force. Days off canceled to deal with the marches in London , They risk getting hurt then get NO support and risk there jobs. One reason for the increase in the number of assaults on Emergency Workers, and others, is simply the high number of 'mentally disturbed ' people being assessed as being fit to be let loose on society. Minky Posted November 23, 2023 Report Share Posted November 23, 2023 My father used to bang on about national service. The system was broken right from the start. The cry of the weak and the corrupt. National service might have been OK in the cannon fodder days to be armed with a stick or pitchfork or just to keep the populace off of the street but what effective training could be given in two years, especially when a lot of it was wasted in pointless square bashing or junkers. How many of those actually said this is fantastic I'll sign on for x years. The vast majority counted down the days toget out. That's why it went to a professional army. Although there were a few officer class stragglers, the youngest national servicemen are now north of 85. It was abolished for a good reason, the UK needed a professional armed forces to cope with the complexities of operating & maintaining kit in the jet/nuclear age, not a massive youth training scheme. They already don’t. Judges are being pressured to give out lenient sentences due to government failure to provide the proper infrastructure. Help out at your local hospital or local area. Give young kids an opportunity to get out of home into some sort of barracks / training school without having to go to University to do degrees that won’t get them jobs. The NHS can barely cope with its primary mission, despite generous per head funding. Come to that, the NHS can't even cope with winter. As opposed your suggestion, where they'll be left with...what? An NVQ in care? Anyone who wants to gain in experience in healthcare can do so pretty easily without a massive 'national service' layer of bureaucracy on top of the NHS one! One of the few saving graces of the old National Service model was that at least some of the brighter kids came out with basic qualifications and/or skills in technical/engineering trades. In schools you are teacher led to learn. In universities if you get a degree it shows you can put the effort in to study on your own.
