The Met

Just watched an episode on I Player. It's a documentary fly on the wall showing the met in action.

Sceptical as I am of the work they do, watching this puts their job into perspective. Credit where its due I would not do what they do day in day out. Dealing with the most obnoxious ne'er-do-wells you can imagine.

Was going to watch another but just heard the puny sentencing and had to turn it off.

And that is the problem there is no deterrent to make these scumbags to think twice about what they are about to do

bring back national service and learn some respect

I think you may find that those doing National Service had a degree of respect to start with  !

Who would want to work in a no win situation every day.

Allegations and Racist and the courts why bother you can see why the numbers are leaving every police force.

Days off canceled to deal with the marches in London ,

They risk getting hurt then get NO support and risk there jobs.

Yes i  agree some can be nasty **** but lets not blame all of them👍

How Judges and Magistrates can continue to issue Non-Custodial sentences for assaults on ANY Emergency worker beggars belief  !

One reason for the increase in the number of assaults on Emergency Workers, and others, is simply the high number of 'mentally disturbed ' people being assessed as being fit to be let loose on society.

We need to spend the millions on NHS  and other emergency services not on Asylum .

My father used to bang on about national service.   The system was broken right from the start.  The cry of the weak and the corrupt.  National service might have been OK in the cannon fodder days to be armed with a stick or pitchfork or just to keep the populace off of the street but what effective training could be given in two years, especially when a lot of it was wasted in pointless square bashing or junkers.  How many of those actually said this is fantastic I'll sign on for x years.  The vast majority counted down the days toget out.  That's why it went to a professional army. I  look forward to rational  comments. For debate.

Indeed it’s amazing how many National Service enthusiasts never actually suffered the inconvenience of doing it themselves.

Although there were a few officer class stragglers, the youngest national servicemen are now north of 85.

It was abolished for a good reason, the UK needed a professional armed forces to cope with the complexities of operating & maintaining kit in the jet/nuclear age, not a massive youth training scheme.

The days of national service, in the traditional sense at least, are long gone, and have been for nearly 4 generations.

hello, that is the trouble with these soft judges, give out sentences then suspended for 2 years, i cannot imagine how police offers working on a case only to see this in court

If they have our sterner sentences then they wouldn’t have room in the prisons.

They already don’t. Judges are being pressured to give out lenient sentences due to government failure to provide the proper infrastructure.

They should replace it with NHS / Local Authority national service.

Help out at your local hospital or local area.

Give young kids an opportunity to get out of home into some sort of barracks / training school without having to go to University to do degrees that won’t get them jobs.

Ahhhh hell no!

The NHS can barely cope with its primary mission, despite generous per head funding.  Come to that, the NHS can't even cope with winter.

The NHS should no more be running a massive YTS scheme than the military, for much the same reasons.

As opposed your suggestion, where they'll be left with...what?  An NVQ in care?  Anyone who wants to gain in experience in healthcare can do so pretty easily without a massive 'national service' layer of bureaucracy on top of the NHS one!

One of the few saving graces of the old National Service model was that at least some of the brighter kids came out with basic qualifications and/or skills in technical/engineering trades.

But that does give them a far left indocrination, which was/is the plan, though.

I thought that was done in schools, and you then if you so chose, went on to university or college to specialise and learn even more?

In schools you are teacher led to learn.

In universities if you get a degree it shows you can put the effort in to study on your own.

Yes there are lectures to attend but a lot of not most is down to you to put the effort/work in

God no, nowhere near clever enough.

But that seems to be the vibe from friends and family that did.

I know 3/4 people that went and studied forensic sciences and not one took it up as a job.

One became a store manager at Argos and then a supervisor on the 999 Ambulance line.

Neither job needed the degree she had but she proved she could learn

Thought so. It’s often the case that those who didn’t do it belittle those who have. Weird.
