critall frames ....the french windows had brass locks...........they are worth a bloody fortune now

IZAL " now please wash your hands"

when you went in the loo after lunch at skool if you peered down into the bowl there was always a sheet floating there looking like a negative impression of a down shot of mount Fuji

We had the luxury of some perfects bits of paper that started off life as The News Of The World , these were hung up in the outdoor loo , for many years we never had an inside loo , this came later when the landlord bricked the outdoor doorway up , turned the pan around and cut a new doorway in the end of the kitchen , no more running down the backyard in the rain , the snow or when we got a flood warning , you could not imagine what difference it made to the six of us who were still living at home at the time . :drinks:

Did anybody else live in a house with metal window frames? Single glazed, obviously.

They’ll be quite a few on here that don’t know what the ‘Guzunder’ was, but many that clearly do and probably used one :whistling:

I distinctly remember the coal man doing his house deliveries in his small flatbed truck, probably a Bedford ? The smell of coal dust is a long gone memory. The dustmen used to empty 'our' bin along with neighbour's bins into their own large metal bins,,,, up on the shoulder and tip contents into the back of the refuse lorry. Rag and bone man,,,, horse and cart,,,, ringing his bell,,,, could hear him from streets away 😆

Away from home,,,, Billy Smart's Circus at our 'local' Blackheath Common once a year. Think we only went once,,,, into the HUGE tent,,,, weird smells,,,, clowns on bikes,,,, elephants doing tricks into the isles between the seats, very close to me and my sister,,,, wooaahh !!! 😲😆😂

Hello, The thing i like most about our house on the hill as a nipper in the mid 1950s  from our back garden there were 100s of acres of fields and woods, i use to stand on the fence a look way out yonder, hear the skylarks, watch the farmers,  it must have made an impact for my love of the countryside

when i was very young ...my dad took me off to Yarmouth as he had some buisness there ....we stayed overnite in the Grand   as dad was waiting for the next batch of kippers to be ready at the smokehouse ..which he would pay for and the crates would be posted off to  various places over the country...

we had a twin room at the grand (a cheap one)...and there was a sign on the wall saying

"please do not put chamber pot under the bed after use...as the steam rusts the bedsprings "

Crittall windows they were known as. The company still exists. And has a website. But even wood windows, single glazed, in my parent's house would have frost on the inside in my bedroom.

Yes, we had those Crittall windows.   Ah, the images that can be produced by scratching with a fingernail.   Then breathe on the glass and rub hard to erase everything before mum comes in and sees what has been drawn.

I fondly remember in the early 1950’s my Nan (a widow) living in a C1800’s cottage in a small cul de sac in Kingstown, Bristol. Now long gone. It was opposite the corporation baths aka swimming pool. The basement was the coal hole. There was no electricity, lighting was by gas and cooking and heating was by a coal fired range. Her radio was battery powered which was charged regularly by the man down the road. She also had a wind up record player and you opened its doors to listen to it. She was a seamstress who did home work (turning frayed collars a cuffs on shirts)for extra pennies - literally. (There was no social security support like today) Her irons were flat irons heated on the coal range and were rested on an iron ring to cool. No ironing board, just blankets and a sheet on the kitchen table.

Her pleasures were simple. A bottle of stout in The Bell  and a pinch of snuff. As a treat  fish and chips on Friday from Johnny Smiths down the road.

One of her expressions which I will always remember (particularly as my dad adopted it) was if you asked her “ How are you Nana” she would reply “Poor but Happy”

Fond memories

My grandfather bought the house I now live in, in 1967. I bought it off my aunt just 4 years ago and replaced the Crittal windows with double glazed.
