Do School Children Still Do Maths At School ?

I popped in Waitrose this afternoon to do a bit of shopping and to get a refund on a reduced item I bought last week , I went to the customer service and the young girl behind the counter was one of the most pleasant and helpful girls you could wish to meet , I told her the problem and gave her my receipt , we will soon sort that out for you , this is where the fun started , the item I bought last week was 19p and the original price was £6.26 , she looked at it and couldn't work out what 19p off £6.26 was , she tried a couple of times and then got her phone out and ended up letting the phone sort it out , she was smiling all the time and I also found it quite funny.

Now when I went to school we were taught the 12 times table and to read and write , t b h I was rubbish at school , good as sports but that was about it , left at 15 and was never out of work up to the day I retired , never made a fortune but made enough to take early retirement and we were never in debt apart from the mortgage  , nowadays they stay on at school till they are a lot older and yet some of them can't do the basics things in life like taking 19 away from 26 , make you think who was better off , me or them

Yes. My eleven year old does. And homework on Sparx Maths. Which has old fashioned adding, subtraction, division, algebra, sequences, fractions, decimals, percentages and all the things that I did at school in the late 1960s.

That is good to hear , we had a A , B , C and C specials class's at school , the A stream done home work and algebra , I was in the B stream and done neither home work or algebra , a mate of mine was in the A stream and ended up a floor layer , he done a lot of work for us and when we were talking about our school he said he had never quite worked out what algebra was and certainly never used it from the day he left school , so do anyone use algebra , and if they do , what is it for . :hmm:

Yes they do maths but teachers aren’t allowed to say they got the answer wrong as it might upset tarquin . Who is not sure if he is a 1 or a 0 this week.

but the parents know it the teachers fault because they don’t eat meat and the no word had been banned while tarquin was growing up and heading to school still having accidents in his pants every day !

Our two did not, well at least not in a school setting. We were not that impressed with the 'education' our son was receiving at school that after two years we deregistered him and home educated him. He eventually completed an engineering apprenticeship and has not stopped working since. His younger sister never went to school and was also home educated. She is currently in her last year at university.

Am I missing something - if the price paid was 19p then 19p is the refund amount surely? Why try and subtract it from the original full price?

I was thinking the same? :hmm:

In Northern Ireland they kids most certainly do maths, my daughter is in P6 and doing plenty of it. My son is in a high school for kids with special education needs(autism) and is good with his maths.

A lot of it depends on the school and teachers, they are supposed to teach the curriculum. My wife is a special needs classroom assistant and the teacher she was working with (who thankfully is away on maternity) and the classroom assistant she replaced has let the kids do what they wanted so long as they got an easy life. This is changing now she's in the room!

A lot if issues is down to poor teaching and poor leadership of the kids at the individual school level. Not so much an institutional leftist  wokism.... they have to wait to get to university before they get exposed to that!

Do they teach them anything at school ?

Well, my 9 year old grand-daughter is learning French at her state Junior school, which I didn't do until I went to the Grammar. The 11 year-old knows her way around programming apps and, of course, they are proficient in the 3 Rs.

Perhaps they were lucky in their choice of schools.

No , they took the full price off my debit card ( £6.26 ) instead of the reduced price of 19p , so the girl had to deduct 19p off £6.26 and put the rest back on my card which was £6.07p overcharged , now come on bruno , I ain't very bright and even I can work that out

TBH, you didn't explain that fully in your OP 🙄😆 But yes, I agree re the simple maths exercise 😀

Going back a few years, when the £50 note was first issued, I was buying some things in a small supermarket where the girl at the checkout was distracted by something. My stuff came to about £8. Gave her a £20 note and got back change out of £50 😆 She even gave me back my original £20 note 🤣 Thank you very much 🫡

I understand now, so you paid the full price of £6.26 and not 19p, think the confusion was not telling us you had paid the full price in your first post.:good:

Hello, This seems quite normal in a lot of Supermarkets and Shops, Items reduced but still charged the original price, ??

You could always go back for a refund. :)

I know things are hard at the moment bruno but I very much doubt I would do nearly a 60 mile return trip to get 19p , I wouldn't had done it for the £6 odd neither , I go for a ride out every Sunday and love going up the coast , it was a lovely day weather wise and I got as far as Cromer when time was getting on a bit and when the sun began to drop it started to turn cold so it was time to head for one of my favourite shops , friendly staff and a few bargains , I thought my first post was plain enough , although our way of saying things sometimes take some understanding

I remember once going into our local Mc Donald's and bought two ice creams from the drive in , when I looked at my receipt they had charged me for three , I went in the shop and told them there mistake , virtually no one could work it out how much to give me back , I think at the time the ice creams were about 70p each so if they charged me for three all they had to do was to give me the price of one back , in the end the youngster gave me that much change it more than covered the whole three and a bit more left over :drinks:
