Also, the other day, an 84yr old man was attacked and I believe died as a result from an attack by a XL Bully. According to reports, it took police 19 shots to kill the dog!

These dogs are like a bomb with a timer and know knows how long it has to run before going booom!!

Someone should point out to the police and the Downing Street Commissariat that more people are killed by dogs every year than by legally owned firearms in 20 years.

I’ve mentioned this before also. The general public have no interest in banning dogs because most of them like dogs. Conversely, most of them don’t like guns so they are happy to call for a firearm ban at whim. It doesn’t matter that you’re about 5 times more likely to be mauled to death by a dog than shot by a licensed firearms owner, it’s never been about the figures - if it’s something they don’t like then 1 death is too many, if it’s something they do like then 1000 would be acceptable.

People should also be less ban-happy in general, but that’s diverting into a separate discussion.

19 shots? Was he shooting a Baikal?

Something 9mm presumably, If it takes that many rounds to stop a dog, how effective against the threat from a grown man?

Wonder how many misses and where did the bullets go?

Quote from the Daily Fail article... "our firearms officers had to discharge 19 shots into them – all of which hit their targets".

Perhaps they should licence dogs the way they licence guns.

19 shots to stop a big dog does sound excessive. I wasn't there so cannot pass judgement.

But ,,,  What I do know is hit a human in the torso with a 9mm it will knock them off their feet. A dog in attack mode is another thing. I've seen,  as a couple of members on PW have also seen, dogs with nearly 100% of their I intestine hanging out and STILL continuing to work. Their pain threshold is zero in this situation. Unfortunately I would be tempted to shoot the owners aswell.

Good job I'm not a police man.

Best advice I've heard is, try not to panic (very hard to do) if near any water, get in the water (most canals usually not very deep, if a river, wade out to waist height) and drown the animal. If it can't breath...it will let go. Or even a stick driven into it's eye to pierce the brain. Then maybe do the same to the owner.

Or stabbed

Very true, or many other ways.

While any injury or death caused by a dog, or as is often the case, an idiotic owner, is one too many. The hysteria around dog attacks is similar to the bad press firearms ownership gets. For the amount of dogs owned in the UK there are not that many issues.

Two dogs, so 8 each maybe (ok any permutation would work).
