al4x
Yes, but farming practices are changing all the time, in my area 10 years ago 90% of the rape would be swathed, (not by "a combine"), but by a specialist cutting machine that would cut it fairly high and leave it all in neat rows for the combine to pick up as soon as it had dried out, usually 5 - 10 days after cutting, dependant on the weather. Nowadays, virtually all of the rape in our area is sprayed off, and then direct combined, perhaps 10 - 14 days later, again, weather dependant. I think that most farmers are of the opinion that they can lose too much by swathing, therefore they now prefer to go straight into it. Cat. Close Cat its got a fair bit now to do with combine headers being larger and not compatible with the rows a swather leaves, get a swather to match the combine header and the row is too large to dry properly and doesn't feed that well in the front. Couple that with it being fairly hard to pick up and they have mostly gone to spraying. Spraying has been helped by the use of a form of glue to stop the pods splitting and loosing the crop which was one of the old problems if it was sprayed and the weather stopped harvest. This year apparntly its going to be closer to 21 days round here till they harvest from spraying just depending on weather. Can't wait though have bloody foxes everywhere under it round our release wood.

JDog
Several fields of rape were cut around my village today and by four this afternoon there were 300 birds feeding in them. I watched for an hour or so and identified the flight lines and I know where I will set up tomorrow. The only problem will be the sun. Cranfield
Vining peas have been coming in for a few weeks, but there are still some left. Some barley has been harvested and some rape. I saw some linseed being combined this afternoon, not far away from fields of linseed still in bloom. The farms round me say that the wheat harvest is still 4-5 weeks away, subject to the weather. There still seems a lot to be harvested, hopefully they will be too busy to disc the fields in too quickly. I am currently shooting on laid barley and rape stubbles, plus (just to show willing) standing wheat.

Doesn't get full dark before 10 and then there is that ruddy great big full moon to contend with. Haven't had time for the 'pigs yet but there is a lot of them on the stubble.
