Doc Holliday Posted May 11, 2013 Report Share Posted May 11, 2013 I can't believe that in this virtual world of manliness that no-one has ever posted anything about having a prostate examination. There's been the odd remark here and there but not a single thread dedicated to it. Seeing as it's one of the biggest killers of us guys I think it only right and proper to get this thing out in the open so we all know what's involved and how to go about it. As Doctor Christian says, "You're either a grower or a..." Oh! Hand on, wrong quote. Here - "There's no shame, we're all the same!". Mrs H said to me last night that maybe I should get myself checked out after she was speaking to a bloke at her work who got himself checked to find he had the onset of the big 'C'. Ok, so what's involved at the GP's? Some bloke sticks his finger up your back side and has a bit of a poke around? Ok, so it may be a tad undignified being on the receiving end but what about the poor sod who's job it is to feel around inside your back passage? How do you think he feels? He probably does it with such regularity that he doesn't give it a second thought. It's just us numbnuts who have a bit of a problem swallowing our pride for the sake of our health. So let's have a head count. Who's had it done and did they find anything? I'm may be a tad young at 43 but I think I may look at having done just to set my mind at rest. welsh1 Posted May 11, 2013 Report Share Posted May 11, 2013 Funny that,my mate has prostate cancer at the moment and is responding well to the treatment,he is only 10 years older than me at 58,and i think it may be time to pay a visit to my doctor for a check sooner rather than later.5 minutes of embarrassment for a life time of peace of mind. kdubya Posted May 11, 2013 Report Share Posted May 11, 2013 yeah been and had it done, was a reached age check (had 2 now) had a blood test which showed a high level of something prostrate related, then went to docs he did the finger bit told me my prostrate was enlarged but he felt no lumps and bumps or roughness (his words) then went to the local nuffield for a full examination and given a clean bill of health, returned 5 years later still no probs the checks themselves are no big deal apart from a bit embarrassing, but give piece of mind over a silent killer of men. stevew Posted May 11, 2013 Report Share Posted May 11, 2013 I'm 43 and had similar thoughts after 2 close mates had prostate ops last year, although 1 is mid 50's the other is 70. I had a blood test and urine test done at the docs, after the results came back he didn't even bother with an exam. Completely clear of PSA's which indicate prostate cancer and a healthy cholesterol of 4.1, I'd never had my blood tested like that before but give blood regular which would also highlight any health problems. So go to docs and have a blood test it's a bit more dignified and gives a good indicator to your general health, unless you have any obvious symptoms to make you want an exam, blood in urine, more frequent peeing (why I went - told to cut down on coffee and booze - it worked) or latent homosexuality! Was suprised at cholesterol reading, ate rubbish and drank more guiness than an irishman, tests and a chat with my gp gave me peace of mind. I have had it done after a bloke I went to school with it got it really bad and nearly died. Work mate got it at the same time. If it wasn't for my other half nagging about going down to see about it, i dont think i would have gone. To be honest it wasn't that bad though i did feel a little violated when he first probed me. But i just thought its for health reasons and just let him get on with it. Thankfully it wasn't anything serious going on in that area so all was well. I dont want to live forever, but i certainly want to maximise my chances of hitting my 70s. I have lived a reasonably healthy life, but i have eaten loads of **** in my time and am overweight. As for age, well my next older brother (he is now 49) was diagnosed with prostrate cancer at 36 ! Thankfully after a 5 hour op to remove his prostrate (only option for him) he is still here. This lot prefer the hands-on approach. It was a lady doctor who popped my cherry so wasn't that bothered and hardly felt a thing! The examination is no problem at all and takes less than a minute,apart from initial embarrassment and wil hopefully give you peace of mind. Had a couple of biopsies because of raised PSA levels, most recent one, a template biopsy (Wednesday just gone) just waiting on a good result now. Grandalf Posted May 11, 2013 Report Share Posted May 11, 2013 The rectal examination takes about 10 seconds. Not nice but neither is prostate cancer. Had it done so many times I just don't worry about it any more. Had the operation for an enlarged prostate about 4 years ago (not cancerous) and the plumbing works fine now. Only get up once for a pee during the night. Also had 11 colonoscopy procedures involving removal of 17 polyps from colon over the last 15 years or so. All very embarrassing but what the hell - I'm alive! Go get it done - PSA blood tests are not 100% reliable. Finger up the whatsit and a fibbre optic scan up the willy if required is the only safe way to go if you have any doubts at all. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

UKPoacher Posted May 11, 2013 Report Share Posted May 11, 2013 A few months after getting to France we were invited for a health check - free. To say that it was thorough is an understatement. Everything was checked;- full electro-cardio analysis, blood, urine, teeth, hearing, eyesight and the dreaded finger up the bum, mine by a female doctor in a ground floor room with a window looking out into the car park. Totally different out here. If you have a slight problem you are sent straight off to a specialist and treated in days not months. A friend of ours had ben having problems with a hernia and getting fobbed off by the NHS for over five years. He got a twinge while over here on a short visit, went to the outpatients dept at the local hospital and before he knew it he had been operated on and the problem resolved.
