Vinny v
avon skin so soft... Yep.... I've heard this really works. I'm of to Scotland in a few weeks time and have just bought a couple of these to try... If it doesn't work at least I'll have nice soft skin. bi9johnny
To prevent them biting I make repellent from oil of lemongrass and citronella carried in almond oil and it works everywhere. If your already bitten then my suggestion is ammonia stick
marlin vs
Soak some cloves of garlic in a pint glass of water overnight and then apply it to yourself with cotton wool as a preventative.

ben0850
I've used skin so soft for ages when I'm up in Glencoe and Lochaber climbing, it used to be great stuff but the last year or so hasn't worked that well. I'd heard the formula had been changed, not sure if this is true or just usual climbers bar talk?? I find the best thing to calm down midge and also horsefly bites etc is to take antihistamine. The red swollen itchy feeling associated with insect bites is a direct result of your own body producing histamine.
stokie
Tea tree oil takes out the inflammation and itch but needs to be applied not long after the bite to work effectively
Twistedsanity
Oh how we mocked the people with silly midge net hats on when we arrived at Aviemore last year, oh how we envied them when we got half way through putting up the tent

Thunderbird
Those little electric clickers work to stop the itching. Other than that antihistamine creams. By the way Avon Skin so Soft does not treat or cure midge bites!
Boromir
repel 100 is the best for me, not smelly and not to oily but taste stays in your mouth for ages if ingested.

100milesaway
Where would you get an ammonia stick ? If you go into a chemist and ask the assistant for an ammonia stick she won't have a clue. Ask for an After Bite pen, they are made from a very strong ammonia solution and give you very good refief for bites and stings but try to use them soonest possible, it will momentary sting like hell but is affective. It won't stop yoe getting bitten but will help with the end result. To stop being bitten coat yourself with Autan it contains DEET and is one of the better products that does work, but don't miss any exposed bits 'cause the beasties will find any untreated areas, as a foot note you definatly won't pull that night it absolutly stinks and taste orrible... from Auntie. oldypigeonpopper
hello, i know a bit late on this post but i thought to say having some midge bites last week and come up in red sore patches even using a dab of repellent i reverted to my trusty pot of RED TIGER BALM and within a few days swelling down and skin nearly clear, well worth getting a pot, a far eastern remedy i bought many years ago but lots of UK chemists sell, need to wash hands very well after using,
