FalconFN
If it had a smaller, scruffy looking snake with it, it will be a Blackadder. Edit. Damn, beat me to it. Edited June 22, 2014 by FalconFN

figgy
Might have been a release or escapee rat snake or similar, they live in similar climate in the states. Surprising the morphs in colour our native snakes can have. Figgy

Rimfireboy
I saw a black grass snake last week, basking at the base of a wall. Tried to pick it up to show my young 'un but it got away. She thought I was trying to catch a spider? Didn't see the snake.

The Mighty Prawn
As stated could be either, generally the adder is fatter with a blunter tail, the grass tapers along its length
andypaint
I've been bitten by an adder 3 times now. Doesn't have sting at first. Then loads of bruising a few days later. Loads of adders up on the heathland.

Seen 4 adders so far this year when out with the dogs more sightings than normal.
