Doc Holliday
I think there comes a time a time in a man's life when he has to try growing a beard. I am at that juncture now. I don't proclaim myself to be amongst the ranks of the more seasoned beard wearers on here, such as Nick Beardo to name but one (I'm sure there are plenty more out there but Nick Beardo esq. is the one the comes to mind), but I had often wondered what it was with beards. I'm on day 10 now and I'm one of those guys who doesn't seem to quite have it together. It's looking scruffy but more in an unshaved kind of way, if that makes sense. Mrs H commented on me 'not having shaved this morning' on day 4, so it probably gives you some indication as to what it may look like. I had toyed with the idea of telling her I was thinking about becoming a Muslim, but she would probably believe me and freak out. Not worth the aggro factor on that one. Although I feel like a I have a full face of hair, and I have to admit to how comfortable it feels, a good percentage of it would seem to be invisible, or translucent at the least. I had thought about dying it to give it more depth or mass I think I will just shave it off. Plus it looks like I've been painting, what with all the grey whiskers, which is most of the ones that can be seen. I think it's going to come off tonight or tomorrow but I may regrow it if we get this super cold winter. So, how to get rid of 10 days worth of facial hair? Shave in a bucket and throw it over the borders so it doesn't block the basin or shower waste? sandspider
Ha! When I fancy a total clear fell I trim my beard right back with clippers, then shave the remains. I'd throw any long hair over the border, just short bits down the drains.
Scully
I have a set of those professional clipper type thingies with which I shave my head and trim my goatee. It will trim anything from 1mm to 12mm. Shaving anything over 4mm isn't comfortable to me.
FalconFN
Same as above but I only ever use it at it's shortest setting to get rid of a week's growth and leave it at that. I haven't clean shaved for 20 years (other than for funerals). I can't grow a manly grizzly Adams beard either, I just get a patchy part brown, part ginger and park grey vagrant's beard. Danger-Mouse
Beard trimmer for me too. I just use it without any attachments. Clean shaving is for interviews only. Before I bought the trimmer if I`d grown a beard I`d just use a small pair of scissors to trim it. Shaving long hair with a razor is a complete nightmare. rodp
I can just about remember shaving, last did it when I was about 19 / 20 and I'm 63 next month. Wife and kids have never seen me without a beard
amateur
When I grew a beard one holiday and SWMBO decided that it had to go, I took myself to the local barbers for a cut-throat close shave and hot towels - luverly

yates
SWMBO likes my face to be smooth and polished otherwise there may be a reduction in certain bedroom activities. I now shave every day.
samboy
I use my beard trimmer once a month so ive always got a bit of stubble. Had a shave in the barbers once, a thing a every man should try, pure lush.

Paul T
I had a full beard from about 17, but shaved (clipped) it back to a big Lemmy style 'tache and sideburns 10 years ago. Swapped it for a goatee last year and didn't like it, so I'm now back to the trusted Lemmy again. Must be 30 years since I've seen my face clean shaved. Archie-fox
I'm 36 and I've had 3 attempts at a growing one, I can't get past the first week without it itching like mad so I shave it off...
kyska
I'm a bearded man, I shaved it off for an interview recently, the wife looked at me odd, the 4 year old asked what I'd done to my face, the 11 month old cried, he's never seen me with a clean face. It makes ale worth drinking.
grrclark
I have a bit of a vagrants beard too and wish I could manage the full and luxuriant affair, but it is a scraggy brute of a thing and I have resigned myself to it. When it is time to give myself a haircut then i do both head and face with the number 1 clipper guard on. I shave the bottom of my neck every few days to try and look less tramp like. Sometimes i will clean shave every few months and let it grow back in, then i use a double razor on the widest setting and plenty of hot water and a good lather worked in with a brush and just keep clearing the razor after every stroke. I have an open razor but I'm way too scared of that to use it :-/ You need to give it a full month Doc to get a real feel for how your beard might be, keep the edges tidy and see how it goes. Doc Holliday
Some sound advice, as always. Sadly, I think mine will be a vagrant type. I've clean shaven pretty much every day, except for maybe the odd Sunday, but it is a bit of a novelty. It's like wearing warm toasty socks but on your face. I have to admit I could get used to it but not at the expense of looking like a tramp. I'll give it a bit of a tidy up tonight and see how it goes. Kyska, I have to ask, do you mean it makes ale worth drinking with or without the beard?
flynny
I grow mine every now and then, I've just run the trimmers over it with a no1, at an inch long it was doing mine ( and the wife's )head in lol. Only problem is I'm a baldie and it doesn't grow to within 15mm of my hair line and my tash don't grow in properly with the beard, It looks ok at an inch long but as soon as I trim back the bald spots show thru lol, Trim it with no depth gauge on trimmer ( a 0) and then bic orange it , if I need to look clean I must admit I only clean shave when a can be bothered or it starts itching Atb Flynny Edited September 23, 2015 by flynny
keg
I grew one once. It was patchy and ginger! Need I say more?
Mike737
I tried one once, but it grew with more bald bits than hairy bits. I looked like I had mange... Now, at 63, there is a lot less on my head, but it's coming out of my ears and nostrils instead - still grey though! only my eyebrows have retained the deep, luxuriant brown of my youth, and they grow like Denis Healy's, and need regular trimming to keep Mrs. M737 happy. Mike.
kyska
Kyska, I have to ask, do you mean it makes ale worth drinking with or without the beard? Oh it makes it worth drinking, makes you really feel like a member of CAMRA, wiping your tash after a long draft
kent
BTW apparently I age from the top down as my beard has little grey in it when it grows
