pigeon controller
Friday, before we set out I phoned the wedding venue we had seen the birds on beans last week, booked on Saturday no bookings Friday . So we set out at 11.30 straight to the venue, confident that they would be on the beans. when we drove down the drive the farmer was drilling wheat on the fields on our left . We stopped to pass the time of day just as his tractor started to make a clanking noise, a quick inspection showed that his front propshaft had shed a couple of bolts so a quick rummage in the tool box and slide under the tractor, Fixed. He said carry on and drive down to the bean stubble and help yourselves. as we approached the field we could see the mass of green shoots and no pigeon . As has been said before you should have been here last week. So we left the field and drove to another farm we had shot last week, no birds. After fifty miles we had not seen more that three birds together so we decide to look at all our been stubbles. At the third one this had been ploughed and reseeded with wheat. It had about fifty birds down and we watched it for twenty minutes and a further twenty birds joined . Now this farm stopped us shooting because of the game shooting and we did not think they would let us go on . We phoned the farmer and he was very doubtful if the keeper would let us shoot because of the proximity of the duck ponds. He said we would get back to us . As we waited the flightline to the field strengthened and in a further twenty minutes more than a hundred birds descended on the field. We could not wait any more and phoned the farmer , who said he could not contact the keeper but gave us his number to phone and if he said yes carry on. We phoned him and he said we would keep the ducks off the pond during the daytime and that would do him a favour as he had been driving up the do the same. Magic. We set up under an oak in the middle of the field and put the hide on the edge of the spread, shot a couple of branches off in the canopy above to give us open shooting and added them to the hide. Normal set up of twelve thawed birds on spikes no magnet. It was now 14.45 and we shot till 18.00 and picked up One hundred and fiftyseven pigeons and two corvids which came close. We did the walk back to the Disco in two sessions the last one carring seventy plus pigeons on our backs the three hundred meters back to the gate which made me feel very old . Today we set out at 10.00 and went to check a farm which we only shoot on the stubble due to the public footpaths and horses around it . We had seen that it had been cut in the week so we drove over the stubble to lift about eighty birds. We had virtually no wind so we set up in the safest part of the field with the light breeze right to left. ( Ive added a picture of the set up when we had thirty birds down ) we started with twelve fresh birds from the day before on cradles in the stubble,no magnet. In the first hour we had fifteen birds and started to wonder if we should move but this farm has an afternoon flight we we have benefitted from in the passed. We were lucky that it stayed cloudy all day as we would have fried if it came out with this hide position. We dropped a few birds over the hedge behind us and as we packed up at 17.30 a mate of DBS dropped by to see how we had done and he has a young cocker he is training and he recovered another twelve downed birds. We finished the day with Two hundred and four pigeons ten corvids and one magpie the dog found a further two after the photograph, this was our first two hundred this year. JDog
A great weekend's sport, with fantastic results, well shot. That decoy pattern looks very 'busy'. I suppose he could have had 204 birds in the pattern. That would have been busy.

neutron619
Yup - an intimidating bag indeed. Must be a lot more pigeons round Birmingham than over here in Cambridgeshire. At the rate I've been going in the last couple of month - about 3 woodies per month - those bags combined would have taken me just over ten years to match. (More crows round here than anything else.) Appreciated the picture of your decoys though, which is like a shooting tip in picture form - I think I've just put a couple of shooting-related items on the Christmas list because of it. Thanks for the comments, the trick with the pattern is to keep trying different things , you will notice the crows out in front of the pattern , thats just a confidence thing we have found works sometimes. Its a simple fact , you can only shoot whats there, so find your birds or know that they appear later on. I suppose he could have had 204 birds in the pattern. That would have been busy. JDog we've had birds commit to the layout for the photgraph in the past??? Edited October 4, 2015 by pigeon controller
