Hendrix's rifle
So last night I was out bunny bashing. I didn't get any bunnies but got a couple of rats. Went to retrieve said rat so have a red lamp shone at me. 5 guys with 7 dogs (3am this morning). Obviously asked who they were and what they were doing. I got no reply. Twice more I asked and still nothing. I proceeded to ask who let them on here and the reply I got was the green keeper, no name, that's all they said. Knowing there is just one other fella that shoots there I knew they were lieing. Dogs have also been banned from going there. They decided to walk off so got on the phone to the mrs to see what to do, she said ring the police and let them sort it. I started heading back to the car and spotted a rabbit, got on my stomach and stalked to within 30 yards whereupon just clicked the safety off and had a red lamp light it up. This led to me being a little bit ****** off. They started making threats and saying how I would shoot his dogs :S I told them too **** off and went to my car, rang the police for them to say there's not much they can do and they will send someone up in a few hours. My question is, what the hell do I do next time? By the way, after they realised they had ****** me off and I wasn't backing down they ran to the other side of the course. Was I wrong to have done that like the officer said? My rifle was on the ground at all times and wasn't loaded. Cheers
rodp
I wonder if you'd told the police they were armed it would have made any difference, easy to mistake a stick for a rifle or two in the dark
fenboy
Terrible , I would never phone my wife for guidance on such matters Personally if there were five of them as you say then I would make a hasty retreat and call the police, if it had kicked off you would have got a pasting or worse. Next time tell the police you think one of them had a gun , they are likely to arrive much sooner ! Edited March 13, 2016 by fenboy

My Mrs speaks sense when I'm annoyed so there's my excuse this situation has really wound me up tbh, the police appear to be useless, if they claim I pointed a gun it will be me getting a slapped wrist. Next time they will be armed, that's my story and Il stick with it, thanks
robbiep
As has been said. Tell the police that they are armed. Also, request an incident number and make sure you make a record of it.
ozzy518
Or how about telling the police you are armed but there's 5 of them and you feel they may assault you and take your rifle? I'm my book that would warrant an immediate response .

I'm my book that would warrant an immediate response . This....then you can't be accused of telling porkies. A shooting mate did this after being stopped in his vehicle by several travellers on his way back home one evening. They just wanted a lift on to the Hill but wouldn't let him pass until he agreed to do so. He called the rozzers and told them he had a gun in his car. Fortunately at that time of year the town is just about wall to wall coppers.
14Supersport04
Shoot everything you can so they will realise there is nothing for them on your ground and take a friend or two with you, hopefully you will find saftey in numbers. Dont do anything stupid (threaten them with your gun) as this will probably backfire and you might end up having you guns taken away. kent
Firstly you will likely wait longer if you say they are armed as they will only go in with armed officers and there are few enough coppers on duty anyhow Tell them your going to have to sort it yourself if they can't get there in the next x period of time. Tell them the situation poses a serious risk of breech of the peace Observe and record what you can in the meantime- don't go in and don't involve firearms Pick the wrong guy or bunch of guys and your going to get a proper pasting at least on your own - fact no iffs or butt's
team tractor
Only today I was talking about this to the land owner of my main shoot. He said he caught someone with a rifle and rang the police. It took 90 mins for the police to arrive by which point he let the guy go and went to bed. bruno22rf
You would have got a much faster response if you said that they were driving around the Green in an untaxed Car doing well over 30.

TONY R
I must say i find this type of incident quite worying, and i dont think you can plan what to do at times like this. Because every incident is different . Going accompanied is almost a pre requisite these days in most forms of shooting. I never thought i would hear myself say this but this would not have happened 20 years ago. . Must be getting old, Edited March 14, 2016 by TONY R
Redgum
Its a sign of the times and a shrinking countryside, usually those out with dogs will be from the 'no fixed address' community and the police are darn scared to do anything with them as they are make there own rules. With the technology we have today just about anyone will have the ability to film you if your aggressive. We have had all this over the last few years, not with poachers but anti's thinking everyone is shooting a badger. The hard line antis will use extreme violence, and have, the police usually are so slow to react and no one ever goes to court, their advice is go out in pairs and make sure one of you can film aggressors. With a fire arm your caught between the devil and the deep blue sea especially when the other party isn't armed ( usually because they wouldn't be able to get a license ), you show aggression, its filmed and you loose. Unfortunately being above the law and a law abiding FC holder, who has been vetted to be so puts you in the minority.

Cheers hello, what area police force do you live? in thames valley there is a dedicated country watch team based around the vale of white horse where a lot of coursing takes place and if you have same in your area find out who is in charge and contact them, getting reg plate numbers helps to,

There were no cars about and nothing unusual. I know pretty much everyone who lives up the road to get there and nothing stood out. UKPoacher
My advice is never to approach poachers or trespassers if you have a gun. It is asking for trouble. They have only to make up a story about being threatened and your permit could be under threat. The other advice I'd give is before you approach anyone poaching or trespassing switch your mobile onto voice record and pop it in your outside pocket. Keep the recording for a couple of weeks. Vince Green
Turn detective, observe rather than approach, find out where they park their cars and get some reg nos. Then if you phone the police you have something to give them.

kent
Cheers, I'm in Cheshire. There were no cars about and nothing unusual. Our local wildlife officer is contacting me at some point, hopefully she will help thanks for all the reply's, gives me something to mull over Cheshire? You have picked a hard one there mate. Spent nearly an hour with Cheshire police after I used a petrol station forecourt to turn round ( I missed my turn). Thought we were avoiding him! We had a muddy 4x4 which is not uncommon round here but obviously is in Cheshire. He thought we were lamping - it was daylight about 7 pm in summer We had been on the Saltmarsh doing some out of season work. Both showed ID both middle aged blokes both ticket holders. Car registered to my address Took him that long to do what I requested which was a pnc check on me. Then he tried to be all pally - it's minutes of a job and most crooks won't want to be found on the check Cheshire coppers? No time for them at all on rural matters! Lancashire and Cumbria are both great though. Many a time I meet them in storage places in the middle of the night. Seem to realise real crooks run away and are not forthcoming with ID

Mentalmac
The best one would be to wait until they take a shot (if they are shooting) and then shout OUCH! top of your voice Or keep a 2 man black cat outfit in the truck to put on and wonder about in so that people on here report sightings..
